~(Y/n's) POV~

I had Kaoru step out as I quickly changed while he made his phone call. I pull off that suffocating yellow dress, and put on a thin blue and white striped sweater hoodie, some black leggings and white shoes to match. I brushed my hair out, pulling it up into a quick pony tail, then opened the door.
I watched as Kaoru stepped in, looking me over quickly but then sitting down in my chair. "So," he began, "in middle school, Hikaru and I had a lot of girls confess to us." I nodded, remember all the girls who had their hearts broken by the heartless twins. Including myself.
"You were one of them?" I took a deep breath, letting my bangs hide my eyes as I nodded slowly, biting my lip to stop it from quivering.

~Kaoru's POV, flashback~

I sighed as I saw the neatly placed pink envelope on my desk, my name written in cursive at the top. I was surprised, few girls actually put their notes on the right desk.
Hikaru looked over my shoulder as we read the note.

Dear Kaoru.
I know you get a lot of these, and I know you think I have no reasoning. I've always watched you, always observed from afar since we were kids. I've always had this longing for that look in your eyes, and I just wish you'd let me into your little world.
Meet me by the walkway after school, to give me my answer.
I know what to expect, but at least say no to my face so I can get over you.

~anonymous

My eyes perked at the rather strange letter. Usually a girl would confess her undying love, but I could tell she was different. But it didn't matter, no one can just waltz their way into our world. All I need is Hikaru.

"Well, lets do this." Hikaru said as we walked to the window, which viewed the walkway. There we saw a girl with (h/l) (h/c) pull up into a tight bun, with some strays falling out of it. She wore glasses, which she pushed up every so often as she waited.

I nodded to my brother, and made our way down, him taking his spot in the bush and I walking up to the girl. I can't recall her name, I didn't pay much attention to the girls in class.
"So, you're the one who wrote this letter?" I stated matter-of-factly, as she just nodded.
"I did. I'm sorry to bring you out here to just say no to me-"
"Well you see, you've got it wrong. I'm Hikaru." Her eyes widened in shock, then notable confusion. Was she questioning me?
"You must have put the letter on the wrong desk. Look, Kaoru already likes someone, but I think you're pretty cute. Why not take me, instead?" I grinned, as I saw her think for a moment. I was just about to get ready to yell to Hikaru when she spoke.
"I appreciate it, Hikaru, but the one I like is Kaoru, so I have to decline."
I was just about to shout, but stopped when her words finally processed. What does she mean? Every girl just views us as the same person. What does she mean?!
"You know, you'll never get a girlfriend if you keep pretending to be your brother, Kaoru."
And she left. Just like that, she left. Hikaru walked up to me, and we both just watched her leave, rubbing her eyes as she probably cried.
"Hikaru?"
"Yes, Kaoru?"
"How did she know..."

"So, (y/n), I've finally found you again." I raised my brow to the girl. No wonder I didn't recognize her. She stopped wearing her hair in a bun, and cut it/grew it out, and stopped wearing glasses. I should have known.
She chewed on her lip a bit, and began playing with her fingers. I was honestly a little upset at first, that she did have feelings for me, or at least used to, but it wasn't just any girl. It was her. The one who figured us out.
"I-I..." she would say a few times, then stop. She finally gulped, and looked up at me. I was expecting tears on her face, but her cheeks were just bright red. Embarrassment? Anger? Sadness? I couldn't tell. Her face looked embarrassed, but her eyes looked sad.
I couldn't stay mad at her.
"We've always had classes together due to our grades. I've always been kind of drawn to you. How you'd always look a little sadder, or a little more enthusiastic in hoping someone would know who you were. I wanted to get to know who Kaoru was, not who the twins were."
"Why me?" I stated a little colder than I meant. "Why not Hikaru?"
"Like I said, you always seemed a little sadder. A little more empty, like you wanted to escape your bubble, but wanted to stay because of your brother." She avoided any type of eye contact with me as she spoke, and her voice was hitched to a different tone.
"But, that was then."
I looked up as she said that, her finally looking into my eyes.
"I don't like you like that anymore. When we were paired together, I didn't sit there and fangirl that you were my partner. I was...I was scared. I didn't want you to find out who I was. I didn't want you to hate me because of the past."
I don't know why, but I felt this ping in my heart. I wanted to just consult her, and make her feel better. But I know this is just the tip of the iceberg.
"I'm not mad. I wish I would have known, but I'm not mad." I watched her eyes widen, then soften. I don't know why but it looked like she wanted to cry, but couldn't. She just sat there, dumbfounded and confused. Her hands fidgeting as they gripped her bed sheet. "I..." she bit her lip, looking around to stare at anything but me.
"Thank you. I'm sorry. I wanted to tell you, but I didn't want things to be awkward."
I smiled, and stood up, sitting down beside her and patting her shoulder. "Hey, it's in the past. We were different people then, I still want to be your friend."
Her eyes lit up as I said that. It was amazing how beautiful she was when she became happy. "Thank you." She smiled, shocking me as she wrapped her arms around me, and hugged me. I hesitated a bit, before wrapping my own arms around her, and returning the hug. After a few moments she let go, giggling softly.
"So, what did your mom say?"
"Oh! She said she'd love to." Her excitement grew as she grabbed the pictures, then went to her laptop. "Then let's get to researching!"

~a few hours later~
I stretched out my arms and yawned, thankful that I was done writing for the day. I looked over to see (y/n), her head was down on her desk and she slept softly. It was honestly the most at ease I've seen her. I smiled as I folded my arms under her, and gently carried her to her bed, tucking her in and turning out the lights. Tomorrow we scheduled her to come over so mom could use her as a model for the outfits. She was more than excited to do so.
I stepped outside, calling Hikaru, who quickly answered.
"Geez, Kaoru! Took you long enough." He spoke out annoyed, causing me to laugh.
"Sorry, it dragged on a little longer than expected. (Y/n) ended up falling asleep so I had to sneak out." I turned around and looked at her bedroom window, smiling at the thought of her.
"I'll be there shortly, tell me if anything interesting happened."
"Don't I always?" With that, I hung up, waiting in the chilly air for my brother to appear.
It still amazed me, how she spent those years figuring out who I was, without me even saying a word. Had she really always been there?
My thoughts were interrupted when my brother snapped his fingers in my face. "Ah, sorry." I apologized, making my way to the limo and getting in.
"So?" Hikaru raises his eyebrows at me as the limo left (y/n's).
"I did find something out about her." This sparked Hikaru's interest as he stared at me. I pulled out my phone, and pulled up that photo of her and her friend, I took a picture before I left, just so I could show Hikaru.
"Do you remember that girl in middle school? The one who confessed, but didn't agree to be with you instead of me?" He thought for a minute, but then nodded. His eyes widened when I showed him the photo. "That's her? That's (y/n)?" I nodded, staring at the photo. "She changed her look, so we never realized she was still in our classes."
"She definitely got cuter."
I don't know what came over me, but I grew angry. My fists clenched, and I shoved my phone away. Hikaru flinched a bit as I sighed. "Yeah."
"U-uh so does she still like you?"
"No, she said she got over those feelings." I looked out of the window, frowning.
"Do you wish she still did?"
I didn't respond. Because I didn't even know the answer myself.
