Chapter 15

02/08 Saturday

It is a beautiful winter morning but I can’t wait for it to be spring. It makes me happy and sad. I love it because is so beautiful and cathartic and the weather is as its best in hot-humid-houston. I hate it because it was during spring break when I lost my mom

I go downstair soppily, Joy is cooking something korean, I can smell the kimchi. “Good morning” she says smiling

“Morning” why is she so happy? I have a bad feeling about this.

“There is no training today!” she answers my unasked question

“Yay! What? Why? ” But yay?

“Well, Mr. Nakamura, had an amazing idea!” she says grinning “ He is going to help me with your training!” What? Why? No! “From now on and until you are ready, Every Saturday morning he is going to take you to your father’s house and he is going to teach you how to shoot!”

“So there is training today!”

“Not with me!” she sings the words happily “Finally a weekend for myself!” I stare at her bitterly “Hey! I have a life too!” she snaps but continues smiling

There is a small knock on the door. I bite my lip and walk dreadingly towards the front door.  I open it and Ryu-senpai is standing in front of me staring at his phone.

“Hi!” I say and he looks up immediately and gives a small step back.

Ok

“Hello!” he says and puts the phone on the back pocket of his jeans. This is the first time I see him dressing causally. He looks even younger.

“Come on in!” I offer and walk back inside “Anything to drink?”

“yeah… sure” he says hesitantly and steps in. “Did Joy talked to you about today?”

“Yep” I press my lips and give him a cup of water. I know that if it wasn’t for him I would probably have to work out with joy anyways, and I know he is only worried about my safety, yet I can’t help but to feel bitter about it all

“Ok. Let’s go”

There are three guns laying on a table in my dad’s backyard. 50 yards away from it there are 3 different paper targets.  I sit down in one of the wood benches and wait for Ryu-sempai to come back from getting the amo. The ride here was extremely uncomfortable, we barely talked and the entire time he looked upset. Like I want to be doing this!!

“Ok!” he says walking back with three small boxes and going to great lengths to avoid looking at me.

I sigh, this is going to be a long day.

“To begin, let’s talk about caliber.” he says reaching my side and resting the boxes on the table “caliber is a measurement of the diameter of the bullet, the portion of the cartridge that actually goes out of the barrel.” he grabs one of the guns in the table and points to the small hole at the end of the gun “The cartridge is what we load into the magazine in order to make the gun operate.” Now he is pointing to the end of the gun and for the first time the frown disappeared from his front

“There are three major calibers for semi-auto handgun cartridges. They are, from smallest to largest, 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP. You only need to worry about the first one because that is the one that you will be using for the next three months” three months? We are going to have to meet  every weekend for three months?
