Will
We spent a while searching the house. The memories ambushed me from every room. I remembered when my mom and dad got into a shouting match in the kitchen. I remember hiding in the living room, crying to myself. I remember my brother locking himself in his room as my dad banged on his door. I remember Dad coming home one night reeking of alcohol. I remember him walking out the front door and never coming back.
I spend most of the time waiting in the front hall with Eric. Soon the Sheriff and his goon come back. "Didn't see nothin'. Not sure what's up with the power, though."
I clear my throat. "I might know. I remember there was an emergency generator here. My dad showed me how to turn it on during a storm. It should be in the basement." I point to the door, an old brown one with stained planks and fading paint.
Eric tries to open it, but it's locked. He spends some time fiddling with his keys before shaking his head. "Weird. I should have it here... Let me check my car." Eric's voice fades as he steps outside.
I sigh, taking in the house. "You alright there, son?" asks the Sheriff.
"I just... need a minute, sir."
He nods and leaves the house, the other man following him. I wait a few moments, then go to the window. They're standing on the porch, talking to themselves. Eric and the deputy have gone to search for the basement key. They won't find it. I lock the door, then take a step back. Reaching into my pocket, I pull out a silver key I took from Eric while we were waiting in the foyer. I open the door and go down the stairs.
