Riley

I was sitting at home, wondering if I should take a shower or just stay up, when Douglass calls me. "We have a situation," he told me. Situation my ass. I'm pretty sure he's just fucking with me, but I go anyways. If it is nothing, I'm going to deck that motherfucker.

But then I pull up to the gate, and I realize the house is on fire. "Oh, fuck!"

As I throw on my uniform jacket, I suddenly remember what my wife told me this morning. "I don't know what I'd do without you. Please, stay safe."

Stay safe. That's the thing. There's a way to stay safe, and there's a way to do it right. What the hell am I supposed to do? I can't die, I decide. My daughter and my wife are counting on me.

We used to live up in Echo Hills before we moved up here. I remember that it had been a crazy day. Some kid fell in the river, and I had to jump in and pull him out. I forgot for a second how heavy the bulletproof vest was, and I almost drowned. We moved out here after that, since it's supposed to be safer out here. Never did find out who that kid was.

"EMS and fire units are on the way," says a voice from my shoulder.

I blink, reaching for my radio. "Copy, I'm on scene."

I grab my rifle and race up the hill. Please, God, don't let me die.
