Eyes up, eyes up.
Brae is a few steps ahead of me when the entire floor goes dark. We both recoil, cursing to ourselves. While we head up, the lights in each room go out one by one until only the hall light is on. Brae looks back and shakes his head. He jerks his head backward and I nod. We both retreat down the staircase. We weren't going crazy, somebody is here.
I remember when I was just a coroner's assistant, working the late night shift at the morgue. Sitting in dead silence, surrounded by bodies. Then out of the blue I heard it. "I don't want to die."
There was nobody else there.
We take another step. I hear someone laugh.
"Fuck," Brae whispers under his breath. I feel my heart pounding in my chest.
Eyes up, stay up.
