It had been years since I've last seen Courfeyrac. We had been married for 14 years now. I also had been in this palace for 14 years now. I'm 35 now and I am sick and tired of this stupid palace.I had written letters to Courfeyrac and he had written some back. I felt bad. He married a woman who wasn't by his side all the time. I was a horrible wife. My father had gotten ill. Terribly ill. Gavroche was now an adult and I haven't seen him grown up like I should have.
"Your majesty, a letter arrived. It's from your husband.", she said. "Thank you, Madame." I took the letter from her and sat back down at my table.
My dearest Emilia,
Time has passed by but my heart still belongs to you and it will for eternity. It's Gavroche's 25th birthday and he wants to see you. I know your not allowed to leave the palace but we wish you could be here. I love you, Emilia.
ps; you're getting old.
Love, your husbandI had to laugh out loud. Courfeyrac, who had been 4 years older than me, said I am getting old. I need to see him tonight. I opened the door and met a Guard. "I have important matters to attended. May I leave the palace for it?" He nodded. "Merci.", I said, leaving this palace.
I walked to the house of my husband and knocked. The door opened and Combeferre opened the door. He gasped and hugged me tightly. He cried. I sat on the ground with him, not carrying that my dress was getting dirty. "It's alright. It's me, Emilia." "You're alive.", he said. "Of course, why wouldn't I be?"
Then Enjolras ran out, with Gavroche on his tail. They fell around my neck too. "You guys, I am here. Then my beautiful husband came to the door. "Guys, off my wife, now!", he demanded. The boys got up and helped me up with the heavy dress. He hugged me so tightly, I thought I was gonna pass out.
"You're here." "I am, happy birthday Gavroche." "Merci, Emilia.", he said. He was already taller than Courfeyrac and Courfeyrac was very tall. His hair was shorter but his face still looked the same. "Come inside.", he said. I walked inside his home and looked around. Everything reminds me of 1826. I was just 15 and we fell in love at that point.
"Nothing changed.", I said. "I didn't want to change a thing.", he said. "I have a wish. Since my biggest wish has been granted, I wanted to visit R, Feuilly and Joly.", Gavroche said. "Me too.", Enjolras whispered. He still wasn't over his death and it had been 14 years now.
"I think we should go there and visit them. It's Gavroche's wish.", I said. Together we walked towards the cemetery. I knew exactly where our boys were lying. They followed me until we stood in front of Feuilly's and Joly's grave. Gavroche hugged Courfeyrac and Enjolras held back a sob.
"I made sure they were kept clean. I asked my cousin to plant some flowers on their graves. I hope that's alright.", I asked. "It's more than alright. You've done so much for us and we couldn't even set you free from your own father.", Jehan said.
"I stayed there for your life. I asked my father to free you all and I stay in the palace. And I do not regret my decision. Perhaps in some aspects but not entirely.", I explained.
"I can't believe it's been 14 years today. Since we failed the Revolution, since we had meetings in the backroom.", Combeferre said. "Maybe we should go back there. Madame Houcheloup would be delighted to see us.", I said.
"Can we go visit her?", Gav asked. "Oui.", I said. The other boys nodded. We made our way to the Café. The bullet holes were noticeable, even 14 years later. "Oh my god, my favorite people have returned.", Madame said.
"Happy birthday Gavroche.", she added. "Merci.", he said. "Can we go into the meeting room?", I asked. She nodded. "Are you all ready to go back there?" We nodded. We walked into the Café and up the meeting room. Courfeyrac and I shared our first kiss her.... I smiled at the memory.
Wine was still staining the tables. The bar was empty. The room that was once filled with laughter and warmth, was now empty and cold. We hugged each other for support. Even 14 years later, we were still mourning over our lost boys. Enjolras walked over to his seat and he sat down. He looked at the bar. His eyes filled with tears.
We ran over to him and embraced him into a bunch of hugs. Love does crazy things and makes loss even harder.... Combeferre sat down at his seat and Courfeyrac at his. We exchanged a look. Just days before this fateful days, we were celebrating our engagement. (a/n: I'm crying so hard right now 😭)
We all sat down at our seats, like nothing has changed. "Can any of you remember how Pontmercy always stumbled in here, talking about a girl he barley knew?" The boys laughed. "I remember when Enjolras got angry at you because you gave Grantaire another bottle. But with water.", Courfeyrac said.
We laughed. "It feels so good to hear laughter from in here. I haven't been in here for so long. I haven't even rented it out. Probably never will.", Madame said. "Guys, I am happy that I got to meet you.", I said. "We are too, Emilia.", Jehan said. Then a Guard stormed in.
"Your majesty. Your father. He's dead."
Silence fell in the room. I was queen of France. France was free.
(A/N: alright, I know I said I would update tomorrow, but I had to do it now. Enjoy this chapter. ♡)
