S A M

"Sam! Sam!" My name being shouted makes me furrow my eyebrows in confusion. Maybe there's another Sam around. Who on earth would be shouting my name in this busy New York street? Are they trying to kill me? After I safely cross the street, I turn and see Dylan jogging towards me.

"Hey," I smile when he pulls me in for a hug. "I'm sorry, I thought it was someone shouting for someone else!" I say, suddenly feeling guilty as he releases me.

"It's okay," he shrugs and I notice just now the pair of scrubs he's wearing and the glasses that rest at the top of his nose. Suddenly, I see the Dylan I fell for and I can't help but wonder what my life would be like now if we hadn't broken up. "What's up? Did you just get out of class?" He asks, gesturing towards my books.

"Oh, yeah," I tell him as I try not to drop them. "I was just going over to Luke's now, but it seems like he's still in the studio so I might just go back to mine."

He gives me a gentle smile and grabs the three textbooks in my arms. "Well, hey, now what you're here, how about we get a cup of hot chocolate?" He asks and nudges my side. "My treat," he smiles and I nod.

We walk to a diner just a few blocks away and then find a table by the window. "Did you just get off work?" I ask him as he set my books down.

"Yeah, I worked overnight," he sighs and stretches. "A little girl had open heart surgery.. She barely made it," he mumbles and looks down at his hands.

I fight the urge to squeeze his hand. Before he can reply, the waitress walks over to our table and we both order. If I'm being honest, I do miss Dylan a lot sometimes.

"So how's this Luke guy?" Dylan asks once the waitress is gone and I lean back on the cushion, playing with my hands.

"He's good, I guess," I tell him, shrugging.

"You guess?" He laughs. "What do you mean? Aren't you with him?"

I shrug again. Another thing, I don't know what Luke and I are. Sure, he's told me he likes me, but that doesn't make us anything. It's honestly a bit scary and the last thing I want is to end up getting hurt. The right thing to do would be to just ask him, but the thought of that scares the hell out of me. "I mean, we're not together. I don't know, Dylan, he's a bit difficult."

"Hey, I don't know the kid, but from what I've heard he's not good when it comes to these things," he says.

"What? What have you heard? How do you know this stuff?" I ask, suddenly feeling very confused.

"Jenny is in love with 5 Seconds of Summer, she made me go to a concert with her last year. The whole way there, she did not stop talking about Luke. It was scary how much she knew about these guys," he tells me and then the waitress arrives with our hot chocolate.

Jenny is Dylan's little sister, she's now seventeen.

"I'm just saying, maybe he's new to this whole thing, you know?" He adds later when I don't say anything.

Despite the fact that Dylan doesn't know much about what's going on with Luke and I, I know he's being nice about this whole thing just for my sake.

"Tell me the truth, what do you think?" I ask him and lean in, my elbows resting on top of the table.

He mimics my actions, his hands resting underneath his chin. "I think," he says slowly as he sighs. "I think-he's Luke Hemmings, and he will do whatever he wants, Sam. He could easily have any girl he wants.. Look, all I'm saying is you need to be careful."

He's right and I don't doubt that he will do whatever he wants. After all, he is in a famous band and well, I'm just me. "I hate that you're right about everything, you know that?" I say and he simply smiles. "Ugh, how do I manage to get myself into this? I'm just Sam!" I whine.
