Luke Hemmings is nervous for the third time in his life.

The first time Luke could recall being nervous was when he played at his first gig at the age of sixteen. He had spent the hour prior to the show pacing back in fourth in the dressing room, holding back his dinner, and running his sweaty palms on the fabric of his jeans.

It's weird to Luke that he's thinking about that when it was almost seven years ago.

Luke remembers his first gig at the age of sixteen. He remembers when he set foot on that stage, the screaming and the rush of adrenaline pumping through him. He was still nervous as hell.

The third was when he surprised Sam for her birthday, but he doesn't want to think about that right now.

Now, exactly a month shy of his twenty-third birthday, he feels even more nervous than those seven years ago.

Luke isn't sure if Sam is coming, but he's sure he won't be okay for a long time if she doesn't. Luke hasn't seen Sam in six months and he knows what he did a few days ago was stupid. He knows there's a very slim chance that Sam will forgive him, but he's hopeful.

Luke feels something he's never felt before in his life. He feels bad for himself, because no matter how many times he tells himself he loves Sam, he knows it will never be enough. Because she deserves more than enough.

Luke didn't know how he let things get out of control so badly and he still doesn't know why he told Sam the things the did that night before he left. He was just so angry and hurt that night. And him, being Luke Hemmings, took it out on the person he loves most without a second thought. He knows he can't, but he would take it all back if he could.

At this moment, not even his favorite place in New York can manage to cheer him up one bit. He remembers the first time he brought Sam here and he realized that day that Sam wasn't just some girl. Wether he wanted to accept it or not, he knew she was going to be way more than just some one night stand. He would have just never thought that he would fall completely and pathetically in love with her.

Luke doesn't know how much longer he can wait. He's been here since five and it's now nine o'clock. He knows Sam is graduated, he knows she possibly couldn't be working this late. So where is she? Maybe Sam isn't coming after all.

He could stay all night if he wanted to, he really could. He doesn't have to be back in LA for another three days. He should go to Sam's instead, maybe he should call her and tell her he is going insane, maybe he-

His heart stops when he hears the exit door open. It's Sam, he knows it is. It couldn't be anyone else, not even the boys.

Luke doesn't look when she sits a few inches away from him on the ground, feet away from the railing around the building. He wishes so badly it could be like the first time they were both here, when things were somewhat okay with them.

When he steals a quick glance at Sam from the corner of his eye, the first thing he notices is her hair. It's longer, much longer than the last time he saw her. He remembers the way he used to run his fingers through it and how she'd blush when he did so. He notices the way she's looking straight ahead and not at the ground. She's sitting there, straight, with her slim arms crossed over her chest. Her face is too serious, not soft and shy like he remembered.

Sam isn't nervous. She's not mad and she's not sad. She tells herself she's okay, that after today, she'll get the closure she deserved six months ago and that she'll feel better when this is over.
