I silently made my way around the small cabin, keeping out of the view of the windows. The door was lit with a fiery blue candle but I wouldn't be taking that way in. Too easy, too predictable. I picked a window in the far back of the house and took a glance in. The targets back was turned the other way, giving me the perfect chance. I switched my view to behind a bookshelf and began the spell.
"Teleport," I whispered. I was immediately enveloped in black smoke. I reappeared inside the targets house, right behind the bookcase. I stepped out, making no sound as I did and advanced towards the gray haired man. I pulled out my knife and got in position.
"You are here to kill me," The man said, surprising me. He didn't sound alarmed or even concerned.
"Yes. How did you know I was here?" I questioned. I wouldn't be sparing his life but I wanted to know how he knew. The man turned around, allowing me to look over his scarred face.
"I didn't. I sensed your presence as soon as you set foot in my home," He said, stepping around me. I watched silently as an ink pen and a yellowing piece of paper appeared in his hands.
"A special ability, I presume?" As I spoke, I walked up to a shelf hung on the wall. Multiple jars sat on the shelf, each holding a different substance. The last one caught my eye though.
"What's your name boy?"
I turned, watching as the letter in the man's hand disintegrated. I narrowed my eyes at the old man, trying to figure out what his angle was.
"I simply wish to know the name of the man who takes my life," He explained.
"Zypher Calamity," I said.
"A Calamity... fitting." The old man smiled, taking one last long 'look' around his home. He shut his eyes when I stepped closer. I swiftly sliced his neck open, a clean cut that quickly turned bloody. I stepped out of the way as he fell to the hardwood floor.
"Have peace," I said, my voice holding no emotion. I sighed, knowing in seconds my annoying contractors would be here to collect the old man's belongings. I usually didn't ask questions when being hired to kill but these people had not shut up about their reasons. The man was a wizard of some sort and his home, this cabin, was filled with expensive treasures.
I turned back towards the shelf when I remembered what I had seen in the last jar. I stepped closer to the jar and picked it up, holding it up to my face. There was a small being sitting inside. I couldn't tell if it was male or female from how its hair covered its small body but I could tell it was completely naked by the amount of skin showing. It was glowing a soft red, a red that matched with its hair perfectly.
My hearing tuned in on the sound of footsteps outside of the door. I frowned. Looking back down at the jar, I met the eyes of the fairy. They would undoubtedly use then kill it for the money. I stuffed the jar hastily in my satchel and turned towards the door. Three men walked in just as I did, two I remembered from the hire. The tallest one walked over to me. His height just barely matched mine.
"Wait outside. When we gather everything up, you can pick out two items and we'll give you the money," He said in a gruff tone. I stepped over the dead body and made my way outside. The blue glow above the door had gone out and the new light source was coming from a lantern placed on the ground.
It didn't take long before they were attaching bags full of items onto their horses. When they finished, the shortest one walked up to me with his arms full of I assumed the less valuable items.
One immediately caught my eye. It was a necklace with a simple silver chain and an amulet in the shape of a flame. The flame was the same color as the small fairy's hair. I grabbed it and some silky green cloth before he handed me a bag of coins. I nodded my head at them as they rode away.
I sighed and ran a hand through my already messy black hair. I made my way back into the old man's house and looked around for anything I could start an easy fire with. After finding a few crumbled papers and an old notebook filled with symbols I didn't understand, I made my way back outside and into the forest near the cabin. I was made aware of the harsh winds coming from the south as soon as I left the cover of the cabin. I rushed through the trees to where I had seen a large rock. It would provide suitable cover for tonight.
I dug a hole in the ground and made a small fire inside. After making sure it would stay lit, I took off my satchel and pulled the jar out from inside.
I held up the jar to my face and saw the fairy was curled in a ball on its side. I frowned when I also saw the smallest of water droplets inside. Had it been crying? I guess it may have gotten hurt being jostled around in my bag. I tapped on the glass to get its attention. It peaked it's head up and looked at me with the most vibrant yellow eyes I had ever seen.
"I'm going to let you out. Don't run," I commanded. I began unscrewing the top when I looked back down at the fairy. With its hair out of the way, I could now tell it was definitely a boy. I pulled the lid off and watched quietly as wings began to fold out of his back. They were warm colors. A beautiful combination of reds, oranges, and yellows. In one flap of his wings, he was up and out of the jar.
I held out my hand for him to land on when he flew a bit closer. As his small feet hit my hand, I realized that he literally weighted nothing. I examined him, watching as his wings disappeared into his back. A light blush danced across his cheeks as he tried to hide himself with his hair.
"Grow," I ordered. His eyes shot up to meet mine. He violently shook his head no and stepped back onto my finger tips.
"Do it. I know you can," I growled. His face grew even redder but before I knew it, he was no longer standing on my hand.
