The rain pelted hard against the leafy roof as the night dragged on. For some reason, I could not catch a single wink of sleep.
I sat up in bed, causing Zyphers hand to fall off my body where it was previously resting. I rubbed my eyes and looked out the window, watching the lightning flash outside.
I stood slowly as another large rumble of thunder shook our house. I crept out of our room and shut the door lightly behind me. I walked down the stairs carefully, the only light being the random strikes of lightning. I stopped on the next floor and pulled out a candle. I pinched my fingers around the wick and as I pulled them away, a small fire started. I used that light to find the rest of the way downstairs.
I passed by Stormy, Dion, and Finchs rooms quietly. The weather outside was loud but I didn't want to be the reason for them waking up.
I set the candle down on a side table when I reached the bottom floor. I walked towards the large bookshelf built into the wall and skimmed my finger along the spines of the books. Many children's books now rested in the place where my books used to be. I chose at random from the top shelf.
As I settled myself into our couch, a knock sounded through the house. For a moment, I thought it was only a branch hitting the house. I turned my gaze back to the book, opening it to the first page.
Things seemed to go quiet as I focused on the story. My head shot up when I heard crying coming from somewhere close. I threw the book to the side and rushed upstairs after grabbing the candle.
I slowed down when I got half way up. It almost sounded like the crying was further away now. I quietly descended the stairs and listened intently as the crying grew. I followed it directly to the front door.
I quickly opened the door and stared out into the darkness. I dropped my chin down and found a basket with a baby inside at my feet. I fell to my knees when the initial shock wore off. I wrapped my arms around the wicker basket and pulled the child inside the house. I lifted it up and pushed the door closed with my back.
I hurriedly shushed the sobbing baby as I carried the basket into the kitchen. The blankets surrounding the child were wet so I quickly pulled them off and dropped them on the counter carelessly.
The baby was light in my arms as I picked it up. The baby was dressed in a soft brown shirt and a diaper. I could now clearly see that the baby was a boy.
I wrapped the little guy in a fluffy blanket from the couch and quickly began rocking him back and forth. As I started towards the cabinets to find some milk, I heard footsteps coming from the stairs. I was relieved to see Zypher come into view. Zyphers eyes widened as he approached the screaming baby and I.
"Is everyone awake?" I asked over the sound.
"Yep," Zypher said as he pulled down the blanket a bit around his face. "Care to explain?"
"I will after you help me feed him. I'm going to change him," I said as I walked to the couch. It was a good as place as any.
After I had gotten the little boy into a clean diaper, he calmed down for a moment which also allowed me to receive a peek of his eyes.
They were a deep, deep purple. A color that was shockingly familiar.
"Hey, the milk is ready," Zypher called, causing me to snap out of my thoughts. I picked the now quiet baby up and settled him into my arms as I grabbed the warm bottle.
Zypher let me to our two seater couch and let me snuggle into his side as the baby drank his fill. I'm sure Zypher had noticed his eyes now as well.
"Where did he come from?" Zypher asked, starting the conversation.
"He was on our doorstep. Out in the storm," I mumbled, watching the baby's eyes slowly slide closed.
"His eyes..." Zypher said, reaching over to stroke the little guys cheek.
"They look exactly like Novus's. No one has been able to find him for months, it's not impossible," I said, setting the bottle to the side.
"Why would he chose us?"
"He knew we had kids before he disappeared," I said, shrugging.
"Well, what do you want to name the little guy?" Zypher asked. I smiled and turned to meet his lips in a kiss. I looked back at the baby and glanced up at his soft tufts of pale blue hair. Nothing like Novus.
"Dew."
Zypher smiled.
"I like it."
"Mom?" I looked up at the stairs and found Finch looking over the side with his brothers behind him. Dion looked confused while Stormy just looked indifferent.
"C'mere guys, we want you to meet someone," Zypher said, waving them over. Finch rushed down the stairs with Dion behind him. Stormy took his time.
Finch got to the couch first and launched himself into Zyphers lap. He excitedly looked over my arms and to the baby nestled in them.
"He's so tiny!" Finch exclaimed loudly. Zypher quickly shushed him causing Finch to whisper out a sheepish sorry.
"Where did he come from?" Dion asked as he looked over me. He reached out and pushed the blanket away some to get a better look.
"I'll tell you later," I said, looking at his eyes for a moment before glancing at Finch. Dion nodded in understanding.
"Hey Stormy, wanna meet Dew?" Zypher asked, trying to coax him away from the stairs and closer to us. Stormy frowned but began walking closer. Zypher held his hand out, letting Stormy grab it slowly.
Zypher lifted him up onto the couch and settled him next to Finch who leaned back to Stormy could get a better view. I also turned and leaned over so he could see better.
We all knew Stormy would have the hardest time adjusting to another child in the house. He struggled with the arrivals of Finch and Dion.
Stormy grimaced at the child cradled in my arms, causing his dark eyebrows to furrow cutely. I would never tell him that though. It would only make him upset.
"He's... okay," Stormy mumbled, shying away quickly. I smiled at Zypher who was already looking at me.
"Now that we have Stormys approval," I glanced at Stormy which caused him to blush from the attention, "I would like you all to meet your new brother Dew."
"Now get back to bed!" Zypher said, reaching his hands around Finch and Stormy to tickle them. The two boys squealed and jumped off their father the run back upstairs.
