"Since you were last conscious we've moved three towns. Like I said, we're in Micah," I started. Wild nodded along showing that he understood. "At first things went okay but about halfway to the next town a giant frog decided to attack."
"A frog?" Wild asked confused, looking up at me. His button nose was scrunched a little. I hated to admit it was cute.
"Yes. Giant. After killing it, I found a hunter in the next town. I got them to kill the wyvern for me because I honestly couldn't get over it."
"Couldn't get over it?" Wild questioned.
"Over it hurting you," I said seriously. Wild blushed and looked away. I said nothing about it and continued, "I now have some wyvern poison in tow," I said, patting my bag.
"Well that could come in handy," Wild mumbled, still refusing to look up at me. I looked around and realized people were going to start noticing I wasn't moving. I chose a random street and decided to get closer to the gates of the village through a more back ally kind of route.
"I met a talking tree. He was quite nice actually."
"So it was a dryad?" Wild asked, sounding somewhat excited by the news.
"No. It was very much just a talking tree," I explained. Wilds excitement turned into unsure curiosity.
"Interesting." He drawled.
"I also found a wild boar so we have food for a few days if we get stuck out in the woods," I commented. Wild smiled and nodded. I looked away from his face and examined our surroundings. I could see the top of the tall gates over the buidlings tops. Thankfully my impromptu path had led us into an area with very few people.
"Would you like to change back into your normal form?" I asked.
"Oh yeah, that would be nice," Wild said. He looked down at his clothes and furrowed his red brows. "Where did these clothes come from?"
"I bought them for you," I said, hoping he would drop it at that.
"But... how did I get in them if was sleeping?" Wilds eyes widened and a blush raced to his cheeks, going all the way to his pointed ears. "You don't have to answer that."
"I tried not to look," I rushed out, trying to give him some sort of comfort in the situation.
"Let's stop talking about it. Please," Wild pleaded into his hands. He was clearly trying to block me and the embarrassment out. I nodded and quickly found my way into a darker ally.
"You can change here. There aren't many people around," I said, holding my hand out for him to step on. He did cautiously, holding on to my thumb as I brought him around and to the ground.
"What if someone walks into the ally?" Wild said, panic seeping into his voice.
"I'll hold my jacket out in front of you just in case, okay?" I said. Wild frowned but nodded. He stepped off onto the ground and looked up at me.
"Keep your eyes closed," Wild ordered, pointing a miniscule finger at me. I rolled my eyes but nodded anyways. I dropped Wilds bigger clothes next to him on the ground in a messy heap. I hadn't bothered to fold them. I shrugged off my jacket and held it out around tiny Wild in a large arc.
I glanced at him once more before shutting my eyes. I hated being this vulnerable. Eyes closed. Back to the open street. Hands away from my body. All bad components in my mind.
Ruffling of clothes tore my mind away from worrying about my position. I, so badly, wanted to open my eyes and catch another glimpse of Wilds creamy skin. I bit my lip to distract myself from the thought, drawing blood in the process. A thought I should not be having.
"Okay. You can open your eyes," Wild said softly. I slowly opened my eyes, just in case. I was met with a fully clothed Wild, sadly and thankfully. I slung my jacket back onto my body in one movement and took Wilds small clothes when he held them out. "Thank you Zypher."
Hearing him say my name caught me off guard for no apparent reason. It wasn't the first time it had slipped from his lips. It rolled off his tongue just right though, igniting something strange inside me. I forced back all thoughts and emotions, pulling forth all the training I had done to be an assassin. I couldn't let myself care for Wild. I couldn't. Instead of the thousands of things I could have said, wish I would have said, I chose the most simple and meaningless.
"No problem."
Wild looked down quickly at my nonchalant tone and as much as I wanted to say more, I decided to begin walking out of the ally. Wild caught up with me and fell into line beside me. I slowed my pace when I saw Wild begin to look tired from the small exertion of energy.
The guards nodded at us as we walked out of the gates but I couldn't help notice the strange look he gave Wild. It didn't sit right with me and I very much wanted to pull Wild close to protect him from roaming eyes. I refrained when my hand twitched to do just that. These unknown feelings were eating at me.
Care and kindness. I could define them but I was not supposed to ever feel them.
I shook my head, keeping the anger off my face, and strode forward. I picked up speed again and swore at myself anytime I even thought of helping Wild catch up or even allowing him catch his breath.About a mile from the village gates, Wild stopped abruptly. He was panting and had sweat dripping from the loose pieces of hair hanging around his face. He looked up at me but said nothing.
"You don't have to help me," Wild said in between pants after a few moments. He leaned down and set his hands on his knees to stabilize himself.
"What are you talking about?" I asked confused.
"If I was that much trouble, you should have left me to die. You don't have to try and run away from me now. I will gladly leave you alone," Wild barked, an angry tone had begun entering his voice.
"That's not what..."
"I don't want to hear excuses. Just tell me to leave and I will." Wild crossed his arms and looked away.
"Don't leave," I begged. My fingernails began cutting into the callusus on my palm, signalling that my fist was gripped too tight.
"I'm a little stressed. I don't want you to leave," I tried my hardest to hide the true, deep seeded desperation in my voice. It looked like he didn't notice because his cold expression didn't change. I was grateful for that.
I didn't want him to leave but I didn't want to have any care for him either. Two things that weren't going to work together well.
