My eyes snapped open and my hand instinctively reached for my knife. I lifted myself up onto my elbows when my hand only came into contact with grass. The last thing I remembered was going to sleep with Wild at Callis' house. I examined the fire next to me before my gaze shifted to a leaf with a few berries and a cooked fish sitting on it. It was placed directly next to me.
I sat up slowly, my head pounding as I did. I picked up the leaf and inched closer to the small fire burning in the middle of the clearing. All around me were dense trees making this an ideal place to hideout. I popped a berry in my mouth and looked around. My jacket and bag were sitting against a log maybe a foot away. I leaned over and slipped a knife out just in case.
The rustling of leaves caught my attention and I looked up, just as the rays and Wild, with sticks in his arms, walked into the clearing. Everything came flooding back to me at once: Callis, the villagers, the pill, Wild saving me, Wilds powers. I looked up again and our eyes met. His eyes widened a fraction and he immedailty dropped the sticks before rushing towards me.
"Are you okay? How do you feel? Does your head hurt?" Wild asked quickly, never once stopping to breath. He set a hand against my head as he rushed out his words. I effectively stopped his rambling by cupping his cheeks and pressing a chaste kiss to his lips.
"I'm okay. Are you?" As I asked, I looked him over. He looked tired but other than that, okay. He was without a shirt so I could clearly see where he had bandaged himself. It was messy job but he had to do it virtually alone so I was not surprised.
"Yes." Wild breathed, setting a hand over mine.
"Why have you never used your powers before?" I asked. I didn't know he was capable of things like that. I had only ever witnessed him using powers to create clothing. Wild sat back on his legs and shrugged. I let my hands drop back down to my sides.
"They aren't really good for fighting, just defense. And both times I've needed to use them, my powers have been shut down." Wild explained. That must have been what the cuffs on his wrists were for when he got kidnapped by the traders.
"I think they are cool." I said, popping another berry in my mouth after remembering I had food.
"Don't lie." Wild said, laughing a little at the end. He stood up and pulled out a few more fish and berries I hadn't noticed. Wild sat down next to me and grabbed some berries for himself.
"What happened exactly at the village?" I asked after taking a bite out of my fish. My mind was still working on overdrive to piece together the fuzzy memories.
"I think Callis put sleeping powder in our food and when we fell asleep, she took you outside and tied you up. They must have been using you for some kind of ritual but I'm not sure why they chose you in specific." Wild said, helping me add a few missing pieces.
"Why did you wake up? She must have wanted you to still be knocked out. I only woke up because of my training as an assassin. She gave me another pill to put me asleep." I asked.
"Fairies have resistances and immunities to different herbs, poisons, and potions. She didn't know what I was."
That made sense. I leaned down to eat again but noticed Wild giving me side glances, meaning he something on his mind.
"What is it?" I questioned. Wild hesitated but opened his mouth.
"Did she say why she needed you? Why she was using you?" Wild looked down and bent the edge of the leaf in his nervous state. I might as well explain myself, even if it might put him off a little.
"I have vampire blood in my veins. She could sense it."
"Wait, you were bitten? Or were you born a vampire? How are you out in the sun like this?" Wild asked, shooting off multiple questions.
"I wasn't bitten, nor was I born a vampire," Wild visibly relaxed at my words. "Part of my training to be a Calamity Assassin included making myself live forever. And to do that we inject ourselves with vampire venom. It doesn't turn us, only gives us a few aspects of vampires such as their strength and life longevity."
"I didn't know you guys did that."
"Not many people do." I said, grabbing another fish off of the leaf plate between us.
"Thank you for telling me." Wild said quietly, a small grin breaking out on his face.
"What's that smile for?" I questioned, a smile growing on mine simply from Wilds happiness.
"I wasn't sure how we would work out because fairies live forever. I didn't know what was going to happen when you grew old," Wild said, his smile disappearing a tad. "Sorry if I'm thinking too far into the future."
"No, I'm glad. It shows you actually are committed," My words brought his smile back. "I didn't know fairies live forever." I added.
"Really? We've had the same king for centuries." Wild said, raising a brow.
"Guess I never thought about it. I wasn't exactly keen on learning about fairies when I was being schooled and trained. I only wanted to know how to fight big monsters."
"I take offense to that." Wild said, scoffing. He set his plate down and laid back on the grass.
"Why?" I followed his motions and laid down next to him, on my side, facing him.
"I could be a big monster. You never know." Wild said, his eyes sparkling as the light hit them. He turned towards me and smiled warmly.
"Well if you're a monster, you're the cutest one I've seen." I said, smirking. Wild blushed and quickly turned his gaze back up to the sky before covering his face. It only made him look cuter.
