The knives the man on the balcony threw split into multiple sharp weapons at the sound of his voice. The silvery blades gleamed in the lights reflecting off their smooth surfaces.
I only got a second to look at the barrage hurtling towards me before a body jumped in front of my eyes.
A scream rippled from my lips when I saw flashing yellow hair in my line of sight. Before I could react in any way, Saffrons body was shoved into mine. The smell of blood and the sound of flesh ripping assaulted my senses.
I fell backwards, wrapping my arms around Saffrons body as I toppled over. Blood coated my fingers as I slipped his body off of mine and examined the damage done.
Chaotic laughing bounced off the walls and I snapped my head up to see the man on the balcony throw his head back in another fit of laughter. Anger flooded my vision but instead of acting on my anger, I looked down at the Prince bleeding out on the floor.
My eyes flickered over the placement of the knives as I decided on the ones I knew needed to come out. Saffron let out a pained groan as I slid the first knife out of his upper arm. I suddenly wasn't so confident about my medical skills. I quickly ripped a part of my suit off and wrapped it around the wound bleeding out more than the others.
Multiple strangled yells rang out above the sound of panic and cries and I couldn't stop myself from searching out the source. I locked onto Novus who was staring directly at Saffron with an expression I couldn't fathom. It was pure, unbridled fire. Around him laid a circle of dead men I'm sure were the source of the pained cries.
I watched as Novus's violent gaze shifted to the man on the balcony who was coming down from his humorous high. It only seemed to anger him more.
I watched in shock as Novus jumped up and spread his dark wings in the air, the magic in them allowing them to pass through his clothes effortlessly. He was revealing his species but I knew he didn't care.
The man backed up with a smile as Novus launched himself up. The guards standing next to the man lunged at Novus immediately. Novus grabbed one by the collar and threw him off the edge of the balcony, ending his life with a sickening crunch.
I opened my mouth to warn Novus when another man went to grab for his wing but a knife embedding itself in the man in black beat me to it. Novus didn't check to see where the knife came from before going for another man but I moved my eyes in that direction.
I found Zypher in the crowd and my suspicions were confirmed when I saw a knife in his hand and a line of dead men near him.
I looked away, feeling more relaxed now that Zypher was unharmed and tried to focus on caring for my injured friend.
I gripped onto another knife, this one in Saffrons leg, before pulling it out swiftly. The action drew a yelp from Saffrons lips and he reached out to stop me. I batted his hands away and wrapped the wound before looking around.
It was a miracle no one had come at us but I knew Zypher was close and paying attention.
"Wild, stop." Saffron whispered, reaching out again. I felt him set his hand on my face and that's when I noticed the tears leaking from my eyes. I wasn't sure when I had started crying.
"No, let me help you." I said, grabbing his hand and holding it tightly while I decided which knife to take out next.
"There's no helping me, Wild. It's my time." Saffron said, giving me a shaky smile. One that caused even more tears to pool in my eyes. He sounded so wise now. I was so used to his playful and calm demeanor around me.
A loud crash forced me to look away. Zypher was now on the balcony and holding the man down against the railing. I noticed the small similarities between them that I hadn't seen before with them being this close to each other. Novus was in the air, dangling a man above the floor and as soon as he saw the predicament the man was in, he flung the guard away from him.
Novus pulled a knife from one of the guards bodies and quickly flew up to where Zypher and the man were struggling against each other. Zypher was choking him while the man pushed on Zypher's body and pulled his hair roughly.
Novus flew up and without warning, jammed the borrowed knife into the man's skull. The man screamed out in pain, a sound that honestly brought joy to my ears. Novus backed away panting and Zypher took the time to push the man off the balcony and onto the floor.
The room seemed to have gone quiet at the result of events. The remaining men in black had stopped fighting and were now rushing out of the exits while some of the guest's did the same.
Saffrons hand tightened around mine and I snapped my head back to him. Novus landed on Saffrons other side with a soft thump but I barely looked up at him, choosing to examine Saffrons condition.
It was not good.
"How are you doing buddy?" Novus said, grabbing a hold of Saffrons other hand. I could tell Novus was trying to keep his spirits high.
"My time has come to an end, my friend." Saffron said, smiling widely and showing off blood covered teeth.
"No, you'll pull through this. We just need to get you to a healer." Novus said, nodding his head in confirmation. Novus went to stand but Saffron pulled him down with his remaining strength.
"I love you both. Never forget that." Saffron said, turning his head to look at both of us. Saffron opened his mouth to say more but then his hand went limp in mine. His head fell to the side and my heart felt like it was crushed in that moment.
I let go quickly, eyes filling to the brim with tears I desperately wanted to let go of. I looked up, Novus's face had gone blank. Even his eyes had gone dull.
Saffrons skin began to flake and turn grey, bits slowly slipping off and onto the ground. And soon Saffron was only a pile of ash on the ground.
Glowing charms appeared, shining under the ash where Saffrons heart would be. Two immediately flew up and one started towards me. I held out my hand and watched as the little, bright yellow charm dropped into the palm of my hand. I felt tears slide down my face at the sight of the last remaining pieces of my friend.
Zypher dropped down next to me and pulled me into his arms before he stood up, taking me with him. I curled my hands against his chest and let the tears fall freely, containing my sounds by biting my lip.
"I will take care of things here. Take him somewhere else." Novus said. Zypher nodded and didn't waste a second rushing us out of the building.
I saw a knight of the town approaching the building and Zypher sped up quickly, teleporting us when one of them called out. The teleportation was jarring and only caused me to cry harder.
"I'm sorry Wild. I had to get out of there. I look too much like him." Zypher said, running a hand through my hair as he kept moving.
"W-who was he?" I asked in between choked sobs.
"My cousin." Zypher sighed.
I said nothing more as Zypher carried me to his friends house and away from the destruction I wished was just a dream.
