"Alright, so he's gone. Can we do this vote now?" Stacey asked, me helping her gently so she could walk properly.
"Of course," I said, "but should. . . the kids be here for it?" I asked.
Luna took a note of them and then raised an eyebrow.
"Hey, we're allowed to vote!" Laurel chirped, "we're actual people in the group, too. You can't treat us like--."
"Down, girl," Madelyn teased, rolling her eyes, "you guys can vote, but this is a big girl responsibility. Someone's life is in our hands."
"Just to fill everyone in," Mark said, "the asshole has been acting out ever since Caleb died." I looked to Luna, who froze at the mention of his name but didn't speak, "yesterday, he choked her out - almost to death if Lisa and I hadn't got there. So. we've gotta decide what to do with him. Either he stays or we take him out, send him away."
It was silent for a minute and then he sighed. "Well, let's see where everyone's heads are at. Luna, what do you vote?"
"I vote we leave 'im," Luna said.
"I'm voting leave him too," Mark said, unsurprisingly. He pointed to the next person in the circle, "Madelyn?"
"Leave him," she said immediately and nonchalantly, "we have kids here. We can't bother with this."
"Are you kidding me? That's killing someone," I replied.
Madelyn scoffed and looked back down to her fingernails. "In this world, it's kill or be killed." She said.
"What about you, Lisa?" Mark asked. Lisa took a look to me and then to him, shrugging.
"Let's keep him, it's not right to leave him to die," she said.
He nodded. "Blake?"
Blake thought for a minute, a bit confused she was in the group questioning, "I vote we keep him. . ." She said, "I saw what's out there. What they can do to someone. . . alone."
Of course she did. We all did. But in the moment, I'm guessing some people didn't mind that thought.
"Lynne, I'm gonna guess at what your vote is--." Mark suggested.
"Keep him," I said.
Glancing around the room, he sighed. "So that's three votes each. What do you think, Stacy?"
Stacy looked to me as if for support, but nodded her head when I didn't give her an answer. "Keep him." She said.
Luna cocked her eyebrow the second the votes were out of her favor.
"Bella?" Mark asked. I went to open my mouth to speak for her, but she started without me.
"Send him away," she said, looking up to Mark and then to me. We all stared at her, confused, but she just went back down to looking at the ground, "she hurt Luna. He can't stay with us."
"Bella, that would be killing him." I reminded.
She looked up to me, "I know." She said.
It was silent for another moment and then Mark coughed to ease the tension. "Alright, so that. . . leaves Laurel." He said, "what do you think, dear?" He asked.
Laurel leaned on her heels, looking to Bella who was staring at her expectantly. As a tear rolled down her face, she shook her head.
"I say we keep him," she said.
