Just by standing and watching Laurel and Bella play I could see the glint of innocence shine in their eyes, opening up as if the world wasn't a shit pile and we were all going to be okay.
There was something that told me I wasn't as pessimistic as I thought I was in my head. Something told me that the world we were living in was wrong, was disgusting, and did want to kill us.
Yet, somehow, watching those kids run around with braided hair and smiles plastered on their faces, told me that the world may have mercy.
"Laurel!" Bella screeched, running over to me to hide behind my figure, "She broke the rules. You can't call time out just because you're about to be it!" She complained.
"Girls, calm down, calm down," I said through my own laughter, shielding Bella with my arms as Laurel groaned and giggled.
"No, Lynne!" She said, smiling, "She's about to be it!"
"How about we stop playing tag?" I asked, moving Bella so she was standing by my side.
"What do you want to play instead?" Laurel asked as if I were a part of it, as if I were playing the game with them. I shook my head.
"How about . . .hide and seek?" I asked.
"What's that?" Laurel asked, intrigued, as she, Bella, and I walked into barn, people surrounding the place and working on different things.
"Basically," I explained, running a hand through my hair, "two people hide. And once person goes to find them. If the person can't find them, then the hiders win. If the seeker does find them, the first person found is it next round."
Laurel bounced on her heels, "That sounds so fun!" She said. I smiled.
"Alright, so I'll count first--." I began, before she shook her head.
"No! I want to be it!" Laurel screeched excitingly, throwing her hands in the air, "all I have to do is find you and Bella?"
I nodded, and she ran in the other direction after I informed her that she needed to shut her eyes. I looked around the barn, before Bella grabbed me by the wrist and lead me in the 'kitchen' area we had going.
"We got this, Lynne!" She cheered, and I smiled knowingly. Without words, she lead me to a small opening in the corner of the room where we put some of our supplies - though it was a closet before the outbreak.
We resided ourselves inside the closet, Bella's head on my shoulder as she shut her eyes and giggled.
I watched as a few people walking around the barn, a bit confused as to what we were doing.
"Lynne. . .?" Bella asked, as I raised an eyebrow and turned to her. She tilted her head and continued.
"I wish we could hide behind the sofa."
