She didn't even look at me once as she drove off. I slung my bag over my shoulder and walked into the hospital. I thanked god that we only had a few patients waiting in the E.R. waiting room.
Almost every night, this room was filled with highly sick kids; ones with escalating fevers, minor car accident problems, broken bone, and then the kids that get the staffs' attention first, the diseased children.
By the looks of it, it just looked like a broken arm and probably a bad stomach ache. Thank god for twenty-four hour university hospitals.

"Oh thank god you're here, Jessica, Nico has been asking for you ever since he woke up from his treatment." I heard Amy say as she walked into the locker room. I casted her a look before smiling as I put my hair up and sliding my smock over my t shirt."How is he?" I asked as I slipped on my sneakers. She leaned against the locker and eyed me suspiciously. "What...? He's okay right? Did the medicine make him sick again?" I asked as I stood up properly.
"Oh, no the medication worked fine. Are you alright? You don't look too hot, you're not coming down with a cold right...?
Oh boy... if Nico didn't see you he would have a heart attack, Jessy!"
I shook my head as she went off on her typically over exaggerating tangent."I'm fine, Amy. I'm just not on good terms with Kimmy." I said honestly as I clipped on my name tag and staffs pass. I watched as she rolled her eyes and gave me my clipboard. "Please, not now, Amy."
"Come on, Jessica! Why are you still with her?" She asked as she followed me out of the locker room and turning down into the ICU wing.
"She's good for me. She takes care of me..." I heard her scoff and I couldn't help the sigh that escaped me.
"Takes care of you? Jessica, you take care of yourself. Did she guilt trip you again?" She asked as I signed in at the front desk.
"Let's talk about this after our shift okay?" I pleaded as I turned towards her. She simply put her hands up as she nodded.
"Fine, but you're going to explain this to me." I rolled my eyes as we parted down different hallways.
My first stop every night was always my little survivor, Nico Roose. He was probably one of my most cherished children that I looked after around my shift time. He always made me things while in his art class, always wanted to hear my problems, asked me about everything, and he had leukemia.
He's only nine years old, and already is more mature than most college students my own age. He was brave, even though he knew his days were limited. I love all the kids I look after, but Nico... He was my special little man.
"As I opened his door I felt my heart sink as I saw the lung machine helping him breathe. All the machines that surrounded him... and what hurt the most, was that both of his parents tossed him aside like he was trash...""It's about time, Jessy." He said, slightly out of breath. I offered him a warm smile as I took a seat next to him on the bed.
"How are you feeling?" I asked as I wrapped an arm around his frail shoulders.
"I'm sick. I tell you the same answer every night Jessica.
What's wrong?" He cut right to the chase, but that's just how he was. I smiled warmly as I stood up, pulling away from him as I checked his IV bag. "I know something is bothering you. Did you go to that concert?""Yeah, we went for about 2 hours, but then I had to leave." I said as I wrote down his stats. He sat up in his bed as he draped his arms over her legs.
"Then why the sad face? Wasn't it your anni today?" He asked. 'God... why can't people be like him?'
"You're very perceptive tonight." I said as I continued with my routine check.
