you make it better

He’d had a bad day.

He had no idea whether his transfiguration test went well or not, despite having  studied really hard for it. He felt so tired, every single one of his limbs felt like it was heavier than usual. Perhaps if Sirius hadn’t snored all night he would’ve gotten a better night’s sleep. Which maybe would have helped for his exam.

He had crammed through his two-hour break, and his day had been one of those during which there seemed to be no real pause, even over lunch. Even once class was over, he had a pile of homework waiting for him, and even though he loved learning, he couldn’t remember the last time he’d stopped to just breathe and relax a little bit.

He’d barely seen you because your schedules really didn’t match up on this day, and, to top it off, he knew he was on edge because the full moon was in three days.

As he walked back to the Gryffindor dorms, he felt the annoyance in his step, even the silence of the corridor not enough to appease him. Once he got to the Fat Lady, he was dumbfounded; he’d never forgotten the password before. That was something that happened to James, or Sirius, but not to him. He tried talking the portrait into letting him in, because surely she recognized him from his six bloody years in this place, but she didn’t budge.

He was going to give up and leave, when the entrance opened. You stepped out, a serious look on your face until you saw him. He felt something in his chest soar as he saw the bright smile on your face, your smile.

“Remus, I was looking for you-” you began, but he was not going to let you finish your thought.

He surged forward, letting go of all thought, and grabbed the back of your head as he pulled you into a kiss, urgent, desperate, and needy. His other arm laced its way behind your back to hold you closer as he felt some of his stress fade away. And then, as a portrait’s gasp brought him back down to Earth, he pulled away suddenly, eyes wide with the realization of how he’d imposed himself on you.

The red that had crept to your cheeks through the kiss made him blush too, as he realized the two of you had never kissed like that. The stares and whispers of the portraits around the two of you did not help either, admittedly.

“You have no idea how much I need to be with you right now, love,” he admitted with an embarrassed laugh as he brought his hand to the back of his own neck.

“Then I’m all yours,” you replied with a coy smile, your heart still giddy from Remus’s kiss.

He breathed with relief, because something in your eyes let him know that it was all going to be okay, that the worst of the day was over then. In that moment, he could have sworn your presence was all he’d ever needed.
