For as long as you could remember, Remus had always been your friend. You had his parents to thank for that, really. You were living almost next to each other. You had seen him walking around, his tall frame and his messy, sandy hair. Little did you know that you would be harboring feelings for him.
One day, just before dinner, a boy walked into the kitchen and sat there in awkward silence while his mother was talking with yours. You knew him and he knew you but you had never exchanged a word… just a smile or two. You weren’t that brave but you wanted to make him feel comfortable enough to sit down and have dinner with you, so you introduced yourself and smiled brightly. He was taken aback because he didn’t expect you to be kind and warm, especially when you saw his scars in all of their horrific glory. But that was just his opinion, not yours.
You were a half-blood and perfectly okay with werewolves but he was about to discover that pretty soon, because honestly who even believed that two ten-year-olds would actually sleep when they had so much to talk about?
That night, you talked about everything that popped into your minds, Hogwarts, and magic but muggle stuff as well. He was smart, you had thought when he cast a silencing spell - and right he was. Your parents would have never been able to sleep with your laughs and voices. He would always remember how your small hands and slender fingers caressed one of his scars.
“Does it hurt?” you had softly asked him and he had blushed almost immediately. He was grateful that the lights were out, otherwise, he would have been in a very awkward place.  You understood that he wasn’t very comfortable talking about that topic.
“It’s okay, Remy. Your secret is safe with me” you found yourself comforting him as your eyelids grew heavier by the second. He was exhausted as well but your words made him happy because for once in his life, he was accepted for who he was.
Since that night, you had become inseparable but your father wasn’t that happy about it. He was a pure-blood Slytherin and some habits never really died. He wasn’t mean or anything - your mother was a Hufflepuff and it would have been impossible for the two of them to be together if he was - but it hurt you because you really cared about Remus. You had spent almost every day together, waiting for your Hogwarts letters, daydreaming and talking the nights away in a bliss.
And that moment came, and you were so excited that you didn’t even think before giving Remus a kiss on his cheek. You didn’t seem to realize how a single, childish, sweet kiss would haunt him for a long time.
You explored Diagon Alley together, got your book, ate ice cream, eyed the new broom that was on display and slept with the promise of Hogwarts imprinted on your minds.

The Great Hall was exactly as your parents had described it. Spacious, enchanting, breathtaking. The Sorting Ceremony had already begun and Remus had been placed to Gryffindor. Of course, you thought. He had been braver than anyone would have expected. And he had already made friends, as you noticed. Three boys, two of them were bubbly, and a ginger-haired girl. They seemed nice and you were happy that he was finally opening up.
When the Hat was placed upon your head, you saw him looking at you with a bright smile. The Hat debated where to put you, Ravenclaw or Slytherin. You didn’t really want to be sorted into Slytherin because you knew about the rivalry between the Serpents and the Lions. But, alas.
“Slytherin!” the hat announced and your heart sunk a bit when you looked at Remus and he looked away. What an irony…
You sat down at your house’s table and tried to ignore the icy feeling that was spreading all over your insides.
Soon enough, you found yourself laughing, eating and chatting with other First Years. They weren’t that bad. Spoiled, yes. But not evil. And maybe, Remus would be able to see things through your eyes. Wishful thinking.
You were tired and felt grateful when Slytherin’s Head Boy told you to follow him to your dorms. You dragged your feet, staying a tad behind everyone else when a certain Gryffindor stopped you.
“I hope you had a great first day” he told you sincerely. You smiled and nodded.
“See you tomorrow, Rem” you said kindly and waved him goodbye. Maybe, things would be okay. Right?
