Remus Lupin was always in the library. His friends would tease him for it, almost constantly. While Sirius would bring home a different lass each night, James always joked that Remus’s first love was his books. Remus knew they were just having their fun. He would chuckle and roll his eyes, insisting that the relationship was perfectly mutual. He was quite fond of the library. It was a place to escape the noise of James’ incessant Quidditch talk, and Sirius’s drunken ramblings. Even Peter’s clinginess was combatted by the isolation and individuality of the library.

ut to be perfectly honest, Remus had been visiting rather frequently as of late, and that had nothing to do with needing new reading material. Y/N was the most exquisite girl he had ever laid eyes on, and she was one of the library assistants. Her laugh was soft, and her y/h/c hair looked softer. Her y/e/c eyes danced along the sentences of the books she spent her downtime reading, and she would gasp gently or make faces to display her reaction to the story. Remus found this incredibly endearing, and in the brief moments when they would interact, he wished he had James’ conversation skills or Sirius’s suaveness.
She would put down her novel to check out the books he needed, grinning gently. He felt goosepimples grow underneath his sweater, and a heat rush to his cheeks. He smiled back, filled with the warmth of her kindness in an instant. Y/N would flip through his books, commenting on each one with interest; “Ooh, how interesting. You’ll have to tell me your review when you finish it!”, or “I’m much too cowardly to read something like this, Remus, I don’t know how you could stand it!” And each time, he would stutter back a reply with a goofy grin plastered on his face. But, he was addicted, and returned as often as he had free time.
He was considerably busy, since Y/N always tried to chat with him about the books that he selected, he had to read each one thoroughly. The other marauders were peeved at this. Sirius would wave his hand between Remus and the book at breakfast, exclaiming that he was trying to have a chat with him. Remus insisted he was listening, but he could only multitask so well, and seeing as he was busy sucking every drop of information from each sentence, Sirius was left on the back burner. Padfoot couldn’t believe how he was being stood up by his own friend, and smacked James on the head to earn his attention. James looked up from hoovering his breakfast, now just as irritated as Sirius.
“Wot, Pads?!” He cried, rubbing the back of his head.
“Look at him!” Sirius exclaimed, dramatically. “Won’t even look at me when I’m bloody talking!”
Remus put his finger on the word he last stopped at, peering up from the book with a glare. James joined in on this, still sore that his eating had been interrupted. Peter looked from Remus to Sirius, wishing to be involved.
“Happy now?” Remus snapped. “What’s the big fuss about then?”
Sirius rolled his eyes, propping his head on his arm and poking at his hot cereal. Peter chuckled nervously, uncomfortable with the silence. Setting his book on the table, Remus stared at Sirius with narrowed eyes.
“Listen, mate.” Sirius said, running his hand through his long, tangled hair. “We just never see you anymore. Can’t even get you to hold a conversation.”
“I’ve been busy!” Remus defended. “You don’t know, maybe I’ve met someone. You’re always ready to run off with the first girl you see.”
James spat out his bacon and eggs, choking with laughter. Sirius’s chortling started small, but soon he was cackling as well. Even Peter began to laugh, trying to be one of the boys. Remus crossed his arms, scowling.
“Why are you laughing?” He questioned.
“Because, unless her name is Jane Eyre or Emily Dickinson, you haven’t met anyone mate.” James explained, snorting.
“How can you be so sure?” Remus asked. He puffed out his chest, indignantly.
“Because your eyes are so focused on that bloody novel that you’ll only be able to see a girl’s ass when she’s walking right past you!” Sirius said, overcome with laughter.
“You’re all prats.” Remus grunted, standing up from the table and collecting his things.
“Oh, come now Moony, we’re just joking.” James said.
“I’ll be back when you have better material.” Remus said, his nose in the air. “The only asses I’m seeing sitting here are the three of you.”
He huffed off, heading to the library for peace and quiet. Remus hadn’t seen Y/N at breakfast, so he assumed she must be there already. The laughter of the Marauders bounced off of the walls of the corridor, echoing into several classrooms. Remus smoothed his hair down with one hand, pulling the book to his side. He started to think of things to say to her that would most definitely woo her. He’d show them when he had the most beautiful girl in the world by his side.
“Maybe I’ll call her ‘babe’, that’s what Sirius does.” He thought aloud. The word felt foreign in his mouth, and he wasn’t sure he could pull it off with confidence.
All of his talking points disappeared once he walked through the door of the library, and caught wind of Y/N’s perfume. She smelled like jasmine and lilac, and immediately the scent had him knocked to his knees. Y/N was curled behind the library counter in a chair, her large y/e/c eyes filled with worry, staring at a yellowed page of an old book. Remus stood still, staring at how lovely she looked. He wanted to pull her in his lap and have her read aloud for him to hear. Y/N looked up with a small gasp, noticing him.
“Hi Remus,” She said shyly. “All done with the novel already? You read so fast that you’ll have devoured the whole library by the time we graduate!”
He chuckled, nervously.
“Nah, I still have a few more chapters.” He admitted, holding up the book. He needed to make up a fib to justify his visit, but he could hardly think of anything with her radiant y/e/c eyes gazing at him. “But, I was wondering if you could help me find something on star patterns. Always been interested.”
She sprung up from her seat at once, motioning for him to follow her through the maze of books. Remus did gladly, pulling at his collar. Y/N made him feel like nobody else in the world could. She was stunningly gorgeous, and very witty. Her charm made him swoon without fail, and not a moment had gone by since he laid eyes on her that she wasn’t on his mind. Walking a few paces behind her and eyes wandering, Remus thought to himself ‘eat your heart out, Pads’.
“Ah, should be over here.” Y/N explained, pulling up a ladder and climbing to the top row of books.
Remus blushed, forcing himself to look at the ground and not scanning her long legs. She muttered to herself, stroking the spines of several books, trying to decipher the titles under the dust.
“This one is about the cycle and effects of the moon.” She read. “Is that what you’re interested in? I always thought the moon was mesmerizing.”
Remus gulped, sweat forming on his forehead.
“Not particularly.” He grunted.
“Oh, here’s something!” She said. “’Constellations and the Secrets Behind the Stars’, that’ll do the trick!”
Y/N stretched her arm to reach the large, poorly bound book – but it was just out of her reach. She began leaning off the ladder, and Remus stepped closer tentatively, watching her every move carefully. Grasping the spine, she tipped the book closer to her, when she lost her balance and slipped from the ladder. Remus yelped, running to catch her. Y/N landed safely in his arms, and the book dropped onto the table with a large thud and a cloud of dust.
“Whew.” Y/N said, waving her arm to clear the smoky air. “T-Thanks. For that.”
Remus put her down, his nose and cheeks turning bright pink. She also was blushing quite furiously, and looked up at him with hooded eyelids, the two separated by only a foot of space. Remus scratched the back of his neck nervously, his chocolatey eyes locking with hers. Y/N licked her lips, stepping a tiny bit closer. Remus’s breathing grew heavy, and he reached out to put a hand on Y/N’s arm.
“I- uh. I have something to confess, Y/N.” He muttered as she drew in closer.
“Go on.” She said, her voice low and soft.
“I’ve been reading nonstop just to come back to see you.” He breathed, placing his other hand on Y/N’s neck. She was nearly pressed up against him now.
“I’ve been working every moment I can just so I could catch you if you wandered in.” Y/N countered, standing on her tip toes to close the height gap.
Remus leaned down, pressing his lips against hers and reveling in her sweetness. The two melted together, enjoying the peaceful, tender moment for as long as they could. Y/N moved forward, backing Remus into a bookshelf and the two shared a laugh before continuing. When he dared to pull away for a breath, Remus placed a stray hand of her hair behind her ear.
“Can I see you this weekend?” He asked, his voice low and husky.
“I’m free Saturday.” Y/N replied. “Want to get drinks at the Three Broomsticks?”
Remus replied by crashing his lips against hers once again, promising not to pull away ever again.
