(Hiccup's pov)
The ride back to New Berk was uncomfortable to say the least. Toothless didn't speak to me while I steered him to our new home, I could see in his body language that he was shocked and surprised that we had found a new home, but still said nothing.
Turning to Astrid, she gave me a sad frown, the look on her face and the words she said back in the Hidden World told me all I needed to know. Toothless himself said so, that the days of man and dragon living together has drawn its dying breath; an end of an era.
And he's right.
I didn't want to accept that fact but its true. Grimmel and the Cabal won't stop until they have all of our dragons and every dragon in Norway to become nothing more than slaves of war or to be slaughtered in the millions.
Closing my eyes, I remembered something from my childhood that relates to how my life with Toothless has transpired over the years.
(Flashback, Old Berk, many years ago— Normal pov)
Stoick the Vast let out a series of laughs as his three year old son ran through the forest, armed with a wooden sword and began hacking and slashing at the nearest bush with battle cries, which only caused Stoick to laugh harder at his sons child like energy and imagination. The young Hooligan heir then struck a log and turned to his father with a grin. "Did you see that Dad? This one's a Monstrous Nightmare!!" The boy then turned to a tree and smirked before announcing. "And this one's a Deadly Nadder!" Once again, a wooden sword struck a tall tree and the boy let out a grunt when he struck the massive tree, nearly falling down in the process.
"Not as deadly as me though! Right Dad?" Little Hiccup asked, causing Stoick to laugh while nod at his little son and add. "Not as monstrous as you either son!" Hearing those words, little Hiccup smiled and pride swelled in his little body as he let out a cry. "Whoo!!" And ran off with his wooden sword raised high in the air, eager to strike down the next bush that crossed his path. Just as Hiccup was about to strike once more, he stopped dead in his tracks at the sight of a tiny bird sprawled out on the grass and desperately trying to take flight, but to no avail.
Curious at the sight, Hiccup cocked his head and lowered his wooden sword and crouched down to the struggling bird and asked to his father. "Uh... whats wrong with him Dad?" Stoick joined his son by the downed bird and inspected it before looking up and seeing a nest and sighed sadly before turning back to his son and answering his question. "Ah, he fell from his nest and broke his wing. Very sad." The Chief of Berk said with sympathy, before adding. "These things happen son. The only right thing to do is to end his suffering." Stoick then gently nudged little Hiccup towards the path out of the forest. "Head down, back to the path."
"NO DAD!! NO!!" Hiccup cried out, causing Stoick sigh and look into his sons eyes. "Hiccup..." He began, but the young Viking heir then spoke up. "Cant we help him? He's... little like me." He said while sniffling, he then looked back into his fathers eyes with tears beginning to form. "C-Can't we help him get better?" The boy whimpered out as he began to cry and sniffle, the sight of his son crying silently broke Stoick's heart. The mountain of a man didn't like seeing his son like this, but... perhaps this could be used as a lesson for his one and only son.
Letting out a sigh, Stoick nodded and spoke up. "Fetch me a twig." Hiccup's crying stopped and he looked up at his fathers face with shock, before the boy nodded furiously. "O-Ok." He said before rushing off to a log and quickly snapped off a twig and then raced back to his fathers side. "Here." The boy said as he placed the twig in his fathers meaty hand, which also held the injured bird, the Hooligan chief looked into his sons eyes and said softly. "Now hold him. Very carefully son." Hiccup nodded at his fathers instructions and took the bird from his fathers hands and held him carefully.
