A week after the wedding, the men needed to head back to the battlefield once again and leave their beloveds behind. Alexander was safer as Washington's right-hand man writing letters to Congress while his friends kept as tough and respected soldiers in camp.
Whenever they weren't fighting against British troops, John was in his tent writing letters to Peggy, which most were actually drawings. He kept the best drawing he made of her folded into his coat and looked at it every time he missed her way too much or needed to be reminded the reason why he had to stay alive.
In the meantime, Peggy's room was filled by John's drawings as more and more arrived and she pinned them all at the wall. Peggy practically ripped the envelope off from Angelica's hands to see what John sent to her while Angelica watched her helpless younger sister admire the new art that just arrived from the mail "I thought Alexander was a way too much kinda guy with all those letters, but John completely won with-"
Peggy throws a pillow at her older sister's face "SHUT UP!"
...
As John writes a new letter he kept Peggy's drawing next to him. He made it by memory but it was good enough, not as gorgeous as the original but still extremely pretty. He notices by the corner of his eye that Lafayette walked into their tent looking extremely tired with his sword dragging at the ground behind him.
The French man places his stuff away and plops in his bed. John kept on writing and his friend only got his attention again when Lafayette grabbed Peggy's portrait "HEY!" The freckled guy shouted.
"I'm just saying, mon ami! If you really like me you would share her" Lafayette says with a smug smile as he places the piece of paper back in the table and stares into John's eyes. John only felt something inside bubbling before jumping into the taller soldier and dragged him to the ground consumed by his jealousy "GAAH! I WAS JUST KIDDING JOHN! JUST KIDDING!!"
...
Months passed and the two kept on exchanging letters and drawings (in Peggy's case, drawing attempts, which only uses to make John proudly smile at her effort once she was trying so hard to do that just for him) and the love they shared only grew with it. But once the war aggravated their mail became less usual. After an entire month without news about John, Peggy got all the guts she had and decided to sneak into the camp.
"It is a bad idea. No, it is a terrible idea! What if they catch you?" She kept on thinking as she hides from a few soldiers behind a tent "No, don't think negatively, it will be ok. You will make to see John and leave without-"
"What in hell are you doing here?!" Someone whisper-yell at the girl as she jumps in fright and turns around.
"He-Hey Lexi!" She says nervously.
"Don't "Lexi" me, what you are doing here?!" He replies looking around quickly.
"I was-" She couldn't finish her sentence because Alexander grabs her arm and pulls her inside a tent filed by thousands of paperwork. It didn't take much for her to figure out it was his place.
He closed the entrance of the tent and stares at Peggy with an angry expression "Do you have any kind of conscience, Peggy?!"
"Actually yea and it is really annoying" She replies crossing her arms.
"I am not kidding!" He says walking closer to her "Do you have any idea what they will do if they catch you? We are in the middle of a war for God's sake!"
"I know! That's why I came! I didn't get any news about John or even you for a whole month! I was worried to death!"
"Ok, I get it but you have to understand that-"
"Hamilton?" A strong voice came from outside and the two stared at each other terrified.
Alex mouthed "Washington" and looked around frenetically trying to find somewhere for Peggy to hide "O-One second, general!" He shouted "Holy shit. Holy shit. Holy shit" He kept on whispering as despair only grown once there was nowhere to actually hide in a war tent "Here! Come here!" He whisper-yell running to grab his blanket and then covers Peggy with it.
"Seriously?" She replies from under the blanket as Alex guide her to a corner and sits her down, placing a chair right in front of her.
"Yea, he won't look this way as long as you don't make a sound or move. Or breathe"
"Greeat" She replies tensing up.
Alex took a deep breath before letting the general in and salutes him "General Washington"
"At ease" The general says walking right to the table where Alex was working on a few minutes ago and grabs a piece paper "So, what is your new strategic plan?"
They kept talking about war plans for almost an hour and Peggy didn't move a muscle, even though she felt cramps in her leg. The general finally seems to agree with Alexander's attack plan and says "Good work, son"
Alex swallow the ill to tell him not to call him son, he just wanted the bald man to leave as soon as possible "Thank you, sir"
Washington raised an eyebrow suspicious "Is everything alright?"
"Yes, sir" Alex replies tense.
"You sure? You're quieter than usual today and didn't complain when I called you son"
"I'm 100% sure, sir"
The general didn't seem convinced and took a last glance at the room, which made Alexander freeze, before he said "Ok then. See you later"
Once Washington left, Alex ran to get Peggy out of her hiding place "It's ok, you can leave now"
"UGH THANK GOD!" She exclaims and he shushes her, which makes her speak lower "Sorry, I just couldn't stay in that position for another minute!"
"Alright, now let's get you out of here" He whispers and help her to stand up but she snaps her arm away.
"What? No! I came here to see John and I'm not leaving without doing it" She whisper-yell back.
"Peggy, this is not up to discussion. Let's go"
"Alex please..." She begs with her best puppy eyes "Just give me five minutes to talk to him..."
"Oh no. Don't do this to me Pegs!" He says looking away.
She runs to the other side so he can see her again and begs "Pleeeeease!" He seems to resist and she groans before saying deeply "Look here, Alexander. I'm gonna see him with or without your help, it's all up to you"
"URGH FINE! Gosh, you and Eliza have the same freaking puppy eyes and threatening voice when want to..."
"I know" She simply says as smile wide once she gets what wanted.
"Ok, you stay in here and don't make a sound, I'll be right back" He says and Peggy nods before he heads out of the tent.
The girl started to get even more nervous. What would John say? What would her father say if ever gets to know about this? She would be dead for sure. Angelica would also freak out and yell at Peggy about how reckless and irresponsible she was. She was certain no one would tell Eliza though; her sister had just found out that was pregnant and the stress wouldn't do any good.
As she kept failing into not be worried, the tent's entry was open and she turned around to see her beloved freckled man smiling wide at her. She was about to say something but he ran and hugged her tightly, spinning her after that. Once her feet reached the ground again they were smiling brightly to each other just inches away but then Alexander breaks the moment when said "Alright I'll leave you to it, but be quick"
He closes the entrance to his tent and stood outside. John didn't take his eyes off Peggy for a second, still not believing she was indeed in front of him. But then his smile started to fade as dangerous thoughts came to his mind and he whisper-yell angrily at her "Are you insane?!"
