JRS CANON
After that day, Susan's favorite play was to pretend she was playing an invisible violin. Gilbert even talked to Maria about buying a real violin for the kid but she said it was only a play for her, that Susan would soon forget about it. Laff didn't think that way, he saw the way that little shy girl lit up when she saw that man play.
He was quietly watching her pretending to play and then he knocks at her door. She stops right that second and sits at her bed, feeling embarrassed. "May I come in?" She nods and he walks in, sitting beside her. "I noticed you really liked the violinist we saw the other day."
"Yeah... He made me fell things with the songs."
"What kinda things?" He asks curious.
Susan raises her shoulders, trying to hide her face from him. "Like... Cold in my belly and my arm hairs got up..."
"And you know what that means?"
"No, what?" She replies curious, looking back at him with the same bright eyes of that day.
He leans close and whispers, as it was a secret. "That you have a true talent for it..."
"Really?" She whisper-yell at him and he nods.
"And because of that, I bought you this" He says taking two pieces of paper out of his coat and give them to her "Can you read it?"
She tries to read it but the word was new for the girl. Then she takes a shot to say it out loud "Or-quix-tra. What's an orquixtra?"
"An orchestra is a group of musicians that play together, and between them, there are dozens of violinists" He explains and Susan gasps.
"A-and you are taking me there Gilbert?" She says softly.
"Well, you can invite your mom if you want to, but I would be honored if I could take the mademoiselle to her first concert."
"I... I think I would like that..." She replies.
"Well, aren't you gonna thank him, Susan?" Both of them turn to the doorway and see Maria leaning at it, watching them.
The little girl then jumps in the bed and gives Gilbert a quick kiss in the cheek he wasn't expecting. He turns at her and she smiles at him, showing her missing teeth, and he do the same at her.
"That's what I'm talking about..." Maria says to herself, glad that they finally got to make a bond.
= Two weeks later =
Gilbert and Susan were already at their seats in the huge and beautiful theater, just waiting for the beginning of the concert. The girl was sitting in the edge of her chair, barely holding herself of excitement.
Once the musicians began to take their places at the stage and everyone started to clap, Susan's heart started to pound faster and she joined the rest of the theater. When the first chord resounded the girl's eyes shined, completely amazed. As the show continued, Lafayette couldn't stop thinking about how happy they both were by being there.
= A month and a half later =
Susan stood up in her bed holding a fake violin she made with her mother's help out of paper boxes, sewing strings and a wood stick to "play" it in front of her bunch of plushies.
"And now ladies and gentlemen, the most talented violinist in the world! Susan Reynolds de Lafayette!" She presents herself and bows before starts to play, making a few noises pretending to come from the violin.
She hears claps coming from the doorway and stops playing to look at her stepdad acclaim her presentation. "YEES! THAT'S MY STEPDAUGHTER! AND SHE NAILED IT!"
The girl chuckles and begs "Gilbert stooop..."
"Ok, ok it's just that your music is so amazing I couldn't contain myself, mademoiselle" He says still standing by the doorway.
"And I wasn't playing, I don't have a real violin" She says sadly looking down at her improvised toy.
"Oh no!! REALLY?!" He exclaims dramatically "But you're a magnificent musician! That's an outrage! I CAN'T ALLOW THIS!" He pretends to be angry and Susan laughs. "Oh but- Wait I think I bought something that may help us..."
He gets half of his both into the hallway as Susan tries to see what he is doing there. When he shows up again her heart almost get out by her mouth. He was holding a true violin case.
"TA DA!" He says pointing at the gift.
The girl runs to grab her gift and admires the case once she gets it with sparkling eyes, barely believing it was really hers.
"Why don't you open?" Gilbert suggests.
Susan places the case on the ground and opens it carefully; gasping once she sees the beautiful shiny new violin. She grabs it as it was the most precious thing she ever had (what actually was) and placed it under her chin. She had absolutely NO IDEA on how to play it properly, but the feeling in holding it made the girl happier than she had ever been.
She smiles wild as she jumps to hug Gilbert tightly. "THANK YOU, DAD!"
He froze by that sentence and at that moment he felt he finally got what he most wished for per months, the love of that little precious girl. He then hugs her back with a smile, holding back his tears. "Your welcome mademoiselle..."
