Love Story - Part 1

1799, the annual Winter's Ball was once again taking place at Schuyler's mansion and the old Philip Schuyler's granddaughters were the envy of all. Well, not all the three of them.

Mary was dazzling the room, as usual, flirting with every single young suitable guy in the room; and taking down the jackasses with trash opinions once the girl not only wanted a good looking wealthy boy but also a mind that work, such as hers.

Angie was being the usual pure sunshine everyone in town knew, didn't taking knowledge of the amount of flirty guys trying to get their shot with the innocent Hamilton. She simply wanted to dance around the biggest amount of time she could.

And then there was Frances. She wasn't ever in shadow, pretty much the opposite, but always for the wrong reason. The girl had a fame of short temper, that was always "looking for making a scene to call for attention" or "probably spending her time ruining her family's name". She was always noticed no matter where she went and the rumors about her run wide.

"I heard she broke George Eaker's nose" An old lady whispered, thinking the freckled girl wasn't listening.

"But wasn't he spreading lies about her uncle?" Another one replied.

"Yes, but that is not how a woman should behave or act like in public. I always thought the Schuyler's were people of first class, not Downtown trouble makers"

That happened months ago, you old bags. I was only defending my uncle's name!

But it was Philip's duty, not yours.

We all know he doesn't have the guts to! Someone needed to do something!

But your father had already talked to you about it.

"Frances, please. I know you want to fight for your ideals but you need to calm down"

"The speech would be totally different if it was with you"

"We were in a war back then. You don't have the reason to act like this now"

"They treat women like trash, dad. Think they know it all but only keep spreading hate around about anything that is different. That's not fair!"

It never is, but what can you do? Punch everyone who disagrees?

"Well, you indeed have a point. She will never get married acting like this"

"People fear her. But I've heard she slept with that Lafayette boy"

I DID WHAT?! HE'S MY FRIEND! FROM WHERE THEY CAME UP WITH THAT?!

"Her father's legacy is all at her brother's shoulders"

That was enough for Frances to hear. As she walked through people, she glanced a couple happily dancing. The young man dipped the girl down and she laughed as the man smiles passionately at her. He pulled her up again and they were inches away smiling before they spin and keep going with the dance.

Frances felt the tears behind her eyes as she felt her heart break once again with the view of Philip and Theodosia's love. She would never disgrace the name of their family even more than she had already done telling the world she developed loving feelings for her cousin. Or ruin his happiness.

The closer escape the girl found was an empty balcony; people were too busy trying to catch Mary or Angelica's attention to notice that the "rebel and scandalous girl" had left the ball she didn't even want to go. But there she was.

She leaned against the edge of the balcony and looked up at the starts, letting a single tear roll down as she quickly wipes it away.

Why do I always have to be such a burden? It would be better if I simply disappear... Everyone would be happier. My family reputation would be back on trails; Stephan wouldn't have an annoying twin to look after and his writing career would improve; my friends for sure would soon forget about me and I wouldn't have to look at Philip and Theo anymore...
