She flew upright, gasping for air in panic.

Her wolves had been sleeping soundly, pressed against her body as they did when they were pups, but her silent cry for help awoke them. Their heads snapped up, their ears working overtime in search of danger, and their bleary eyes blinked several times as they tried to focus. Soft, luminescent moonlight trickled into the room from the window, nearly touching the side of the bed.

Everything seemed to be at peace, except for her. Cross gave her a wary look, his ears perked attentatively, and Skeet laid his head across her lap. She didn't realize she was shaking until Thane shifted against her back, providing solid support. Her cheeks were wet and her heart thundered in her chest.

She had the nightmare again.

It had returned, after all the months she spent in bliss, the nightmare chose to return in the wake of her new life. She didn't know if it was a sign of bad luck but there was no explanation as to why the nightmare would suddenly flare up again. The only wolves she had seen were Reeve's black ones and they hadn't done enough to trigger her. In fact, there was something powerfully peaceful about them, their terrifying looks set aside.

She had thought she would dream of her father and the fate he had met, it was only natural for someone to after experiencing something so traumatic, but it seemed what had happened in her past was far more terrible. Her conscience was stuck on the wolves while her heart was shattered with her father.

Arch began to lick her hands, soothing her panicked tingles, and the other wolves settled a little from their alert positions. They watched her, gauging and worried. Despite being wolves, they could sense her emotions. They knew. She sniffled, attempting to regulate her breathing, but the tears would not be sedated.

The more she thought about her father, with the accumulation of her response to the nightmare, she just had to cry. And she did exactly that. She wrapped her arms around Skeet's head, burying her wet face within his course, thick fur, and she wept through the pain. She missed her father. She regretted what had happened. She feared for her wolves. She was afraid of the future.

Everything was uprooted and floating down river. What little spell she had experienced when finding Reeve and the day before was long gone as reality came crashing back in ferocity. The only thing that seemed to stand solid against the storm was the single thought of Reeve. After her father, she wasn't sure she had any family left. She hoped that there was some distant family but she didn't know how to find out.

At the moment, she was without family. Reeve was incredibly gracious to accept a complete stranger into her home, or were they even strangers?

She was so confused. Inflicted by her feelings, tormented by her mind, and broken because her fathers death was all her fault. If only she had revealed the wolf pups to him sooner, than he would still be breathing, they would be settled on the old couch in their old farmhouse, and he would be holding her close, chasing away her nightmare, while netflix played their favorite show in the background. And he wasn't. She didn't even bury his body. There was no grave for her to visit, no place to carry her burdens and leave them. No place to remember her father and the lack of respect she had shown his body was torturing.
