Just Barely Together

We took all of them home and I immediately went up to our room. I take off my makeup and I pull my pajamas on. I tie my hair in a bun as Damon walks in.

"Elena, we have to talk."

"We don't have to do anything."

"How long have you known?"

"The thing that was in the bag at the gas station. I took a pregnancy test but I didn't expect it to be positive. I didn't know if I wanted it to be."

"What are you gonna do?"

"I don't know."

"You're not."

"I was thinking about it."

"No you weren't."

"No because you were." I shoot him a cold glare.

"What?! How could you even think that Elena?!?"

"Because this isn't how we act when we find out!" He stands there speechless.

"Usually we're smiling and crying and laughing because this is only how we would react if I were a teenager!"

"Elena, we have 5 kids."

"Then I'm getting an abortion! You obviously don't care about this baby!"

"Fine! Do whatever the hell you want!"

"I'M GOING IN THE MORNING!!!!" I yell.

"And I'm not spending tonight with my 'loving husband' because if he really loved me he wouldn't make me do this." The tears flood down my face as I go into a guest bedroom. I sit there and cry for a while. Someone knocks on my door.

"Stay away from me Damon!" Someone comes in.

"Elena are you okay?" Caroline sits down on the bed and I break down completely. She holds me as I cry.

"What's going on?"

"I'm p-pregnant."

"Then what's the problem?"

"Damon wants me to get an abortion."

"I'm going to kill him."

"Caroline I don't know what to do. I want my baby but I don't want to loose him."

"I don't know. I don't have 5 kids... Only 2." It clicks.

"CAROLINE YOU'RE-" She covers my mouth and nods.

"Does he know?"

"You're the only one I've told."

"At least Klaus would be happy about it."

"I can't believe he wants you to get rid of a tiny life."

"The worst part is if I don't do it I feel like I'd loose him."

"Then you have to make a choice."

"I can't give the baby up for adoption. It would be miserable."

"I know."

"Then I have to do it."

"Okay."

"Will you come with me?"

"Of course Elena. I'll always be there for you." I wrap Care in a hug.

"Now how about we go to the Gilbert house and have a slumber party?"

"I'm in. I'm just afraid to face him."

"I want to talk to him for a sec."

"Okay." She goes into the room and I listen in.

"Damon?"

"What?"

"You need to know something."

"And what is that?"

"You're not the guy who's like my brother anymore. Elena just told me that you want her to get an abortion. Why?"

"Because the world is crumbling around us. It's not safe right now. Bringing a baby into a world like this. We can't."

"She also told me that she's afraid to face you. She doesn't want to because she doesn't want you to get upset."

"Well tell my wife that people aren't always happy."

"But she wants to make you happy. She needs that happiness in her life. Because you two have an epic romance story. Don't make the ending like Romeo and Juliet. Make it yours. She loves you so much. But she also did say she was afraid. That's not healthy. The day you took your vows you promised that ring on her finger would only be a sign of love. You order her around now. She isn't your slave. I don't know what this is but you're being a jackass and she's afraid. The rate you're going, you two are just barely together."

"What do you mean?"

"How many more times is she gonna put up with this Damon?"

"Caroline, I don't want to loose her."

"Then stand up, get some sense in your clearly diseased brain. Write her a letter or something. But you need to fix this because you both need each other. You've been capable of some ugly things. Don't be that Damon that throws up those walls and hides. Because the real Damon is my friend. Not the guy that turned Vicki, used me and killed people. Be the better man."

"I have to talk to her."

"No. We're going up to my Dad's old cabin. She's gonna stay there until she has the baby. No contact until she finds out the gender."

"You can't do that to me."

"It's a test. To see how much you love her. If you do, you'll respect her choices." Caroline comes out and we start packing. We start heading up to the cabin. As we drive away, I see Damon in the rearview mirror. His look is of pure brokenness.
