Chapter Two

My alarm going off was the worst sound that I had ever heard. Even if it was my sixteenth birthday. I just hated mornings, and waking up, and getting out of bed, and then there was school. That was going to be annoying today. I wondered which one of my classes my friends were going to get the teacher to sing 'Happy Birthday' to me. I stretched and rubbed my eyes before switching off the infernal beeping that was my alarm.

I wondered about who could potentially be at the end of my string, and wondering how long it would be until the string actually appeared between myself and my partner. I didn't think that the girl would be much younger than me, at least I hoped not. I would hate not having my string for a year or two. The wait would be torture.

I pulled my phone off my bedside cabinet and started scrolling through the social media's that I had on my phone. I sometimes scrolled through my phone to help wake me up in the morning's, or just to waste time when I didn't want to get up to go to school. "Ryan! Michael! Get up!"

"I'm up, mum!" Ryan, my older brother by two years, called back from the other side of the hallway. The lucky bugger managed to have Friday's off from college, but then again, he worked in the local corner shop instead. I heard his door open and he headed down the hallway to the bathroom. "Oh, mum, I'll be back late tonight. Jake and I are going to grab a bite to eat and a movie when we finish work."

"Have fun." My mother told him, heading down the hallway as the bathroom door began to shut. Then, her footsteps stopped and turned. "Ryan, don't make any plans with Jake for tomorrow. I know what the pair of you are like. It's Michael's birthday meal, and you are going to be there."

"Yeah, I know." Ryan replied, not really seeming to be paying attention to the conversation. I heard the bathroom door shut and my mother heading downstairs, knocking on my door as she passed.

I groaned, thinking about the fact that I had to deal with my brother tomorrow for that meal. I might have preferred if it Ryan had actually made plans with Jake and might have been going somewhere with him. My brother had this unique skill of being able to annoy me just by breathing, so, it meant that tomorrow was going to feel like a lifetime.

After waiting for my brother to finish in the bathroom, I sat up and pushed my hair out of my face, spotting the thread on my finger. Either the person was an older woman, older guy, or we were actually born on the exact same day. I didn't actually care which one it was, I just wanted to find whoever it was immediately.

I jumped out of bed and started to dress. I could head into school to see if I could find them – it was the most likely option. Then, if I didn't find them, I could sneak out at break after my second lesson and just skip school to follow my string. Hopefully, the teachers wouldn't actually notice – and I'd only be skipping maths, anyway. I could just walk back in at the end of lunch and go back to classes as normal if I didn't have any luck – and then I could try again after school.

I finished dressing and headed downstairs to the kitchen, where dad was sipping his coffee, my brother was inhaling toast, and my mother was cooking some scrambled eggs at the stove. She always did it for my birthday as she knew that scrambled eggs on toast was my favourite. "Good morning."

"Happy birthday!" The three of them told me, Ryan mumbling it through a mouthful of toast, but at least the thought was there. I sat down and my mother set a plate in front of me. She squeezed my shoulder as she headed over to the kettle. "Did you struggle to get up this morning?"

"A little, but I did wake up with a string, so, that is a good thing." I explained as my mother put an orange juice next to my plate. I started eating a little quicker than normal. My family seemed a little surprised that I already had my string on my birthday.
