I sat in my front garden playing with my cars and trucks. My parents wouldn't let me wander the streets to play with the other kids but I was allowed to play in my garden, which was good enough for me because at least I was outside. I liked being outside. Especially when it was nice and sunny, like it was today.
I pulled one of my cars back so it shot forward by itself, and it went straight under the gate, into the street. I wasn't going to be getting that back.
That had been my favourite car – and my parents would never agree to let me go outside of the front garden to get it. That toy was lost forever. I looked down at the cars left around me and wanted to pick my new favourite car. But that one had been blue. I liked blue. There were no other blue cars in my collection.
Something bumped against my leg and I looked down to see the blue car that had made its way to the road before. Now, it was back by me. I was confused of how it could have done that, so, I looked at the gate. I was surprised that there was a kid there.
"Hi. What are you doing in there?" She asked. Well, I thought it was a girl. They had long hair that went past their shoulders, and girls usually had longer hair. She smiled at me, showing a gap where she had lost a tooth. "Why don't you come out and play?"
"I can't. I'm now allowed. Mum and dad said that I'm too young and that it's too dangerous." I told her, shuffling closer to the gate. "I'm not allowed to go outside of the garden."
"Well, that sucks." She replied, sitting down just on the other side of the gate. She pulled a car from her pocket. "We can play by here then. You've got a lot of cars there. Which one is your favourite car?"
"The blue one. Blue is my favourite colour and it goes really fast." I answered. Then, I pulled the car back and let it speed off towards her. She let it bump against her foot before picking it up. "Which car is your favourite?"
"This purple on with flames." She said, holding up the one that she had pulled from her pocket. It was a little weird to see a girl playing with cars, but I didn't mean. It meant that I could hang out with her. She pushed it under the gate to me, but it wasn't one of the bars that you pull back to shoot forward. Still, it looked really cool. "It doesn't go very fast, or far, but it still looks really pretty."
We sat there and played with the cars for a long time. I didn't know how long we had been playing for, but I just knew that it had been really fun. Our little world was interrupted by someone calling a name. "Jackie!"
"That's me. I have to go. See you tomorrow." The girl told me, getting up and heading off and away from the gate. I watched her leave, happy that she said that she was going to see me tomorrow. It meant that I was going to be able to hang out with here again.
Even after she had gone, I stayed outside, playing with the cars that were there. Then, my mother came out to get me and bring me inside since it was getting late. She had to help me carry all the cars inside. It sucked that I had to go to bed soon after she made me come inside, but it meant that I was closer to seeing Jackie tomorrow.
Over the next few weeks, Jackie made sure to come to my front gate every day so we could play with the cars together. We became very close and I thought that we would end up being best friends forever. I mean, we always had fun when hanging out and we actually had similar likes and dislikes. That was always going to be great in a friendship.
It was nearly three months after we had first met, and become close, that Jackie's parents announced that they were moving away. Jackie didn't seem happy about it, but he said that he didn't have a choice because his parents needed to move for work. It was the worst news that I thought I would ever hear.
