day 5-continued

"i have a question for all you remaining parents. when did you suspect your children were homosexuals?" marilee asked.

"a very early age," hayley's mom proclaimed, "we would watch horror movies together and i noticed she spent way too much time staring at the naked woman in the shining."

ashley giggled very discreetly under her breath, hayley then putting her hands over her face in utter embarrassment.

"brendon would always want to help me pick out perfumes when he was little and they were so flowery. he even asked for britney spears perfume for christmas a few years ago," my mom shared to the whole group. thanks.

parent therapy was hell. i learned way too much about everyone from everyone's parents than i ever wanted to know, including the fact that ryan's dad said he walked in on his son having, "fag alone time with magazine men." they were not my words, they were his.

the time after parent therapy takes us to cabin time. ryan and i were sitting on his bed together and initiating small talk while jon and spencer went who knows where. i'm pretty sure dallon went to talk to lynn or something, they've become good friends.

"what do you think your other relatives would do if they knew you were here?" ryan questioned.

"they all probably already know. it wouldn't surprise me one bit if when i went home for whatever family holiday is next my distant family knew all about how my gay conversion camp experience was."

"my dad is the exact opposite. he avoids the subject of me being gay all the time, including the times when i'm the one to bring it up."

"i feel like my parents knew, they just didn't want to face the fact that they had a 'sinful' son."

"sinful in many ways, if you know what i mean."

"shut up," i responded, my cheeks turning red at the implied promiscuity.

"anyway, back to talking, what were people at your school like?"

"dicks. guys wouldn't even go near me because they thought i would hit on them. their sorry asses wish i would hit on them because i'm goddamn beautiful."

"you're right about that. everything about you is perfect, down to your blood type."

"i was kidding, but thank you! you're gorgeous in every way, too."

ryan blushed and i smiled at him in a very wholesome way.

"what do you wanna do? and don't say fuck, i have a feeling that jon and spencer are already taking care of that for today."

"i wasn't gonna say fuck! i just like talking with you, it's nice. it's relieving to finally be able to open up to someone. i haven't been able to do that for months," i confessed, looking down a bit so that it would show my mildly embarrassed undertones.

"yeah, it is great. you're such an easy person to talk to because you read people so well that i don't even try to lie to you."

"i have been told that i'm more of a people person. it's too bad i don't really have friends at home anymore. sometimes i just want to walk away from all of it and not have a care, but my family would literally send the fbi to go on a search for me, no matter the cost. i know deep down that they didn't want to send me here, but everyone else urged them to and said that they had no other choice."

"i have a serious question."

"what?"

"did your mom ever get you that britney perfume?"

"shut up!" i retorted, playfully slapping him in the leg.

"okay, i actually have a question now."

"i swear to god..."

"no, it's a real one this time!"

"go on," i answered hesitantly.

"why didn't you just run away when it all started going downhill?"

i've never thought about that.

"i'm not really sure," i stated, "it was never really a thought in my mind. also, my parents never really outright knew about my gay until they decided to send me here."

"i've run away before."
