She began to awaken.

Her mind was muddled with memories of what had happened to her as she sat up. A headache began to form as she looked around, the young woman found herself straining under white lights. Slowly her vision focused and allowed her to realize she was resting in the infirmary.

More notably, a familiar person leaned peacefully asleep by the foot of her bed. She was pleasantly surprised and gently ran her slender fingers through the tuft of white and black hair. The girl could only laugh at the murmuring of disagreement over waking up. Strangely that noise seemed to jolt him awake and he could only smile dreamily at the lovely sight that met his eyes.

"Good evening, darling."

Katie couldn't contain the spread of a smile at his words. So she made a meek humming noise in response as she stretched lazily. The stiffness in her muscles and bones lifted as she raised her intertwined hands above her head. She collected her self and smiled once more at Shiro.

"Evening, huh? How long did I stay in the freezer?"

"Three days, 16 hours and 37 minutes."

"Shiro, you didn't stay here the whole time did you?" She reprimanded in an endearing tone.

"Of course not, Matt and I took shifts. I think Matt likes Allura." Shiro grinned mischievously and Pidge laughed once more at the idea of her dorky brother with a girl literally out of this world.

"We'll see. I thought Lance was after the princess. And in any case there's millions of people head over heels for Allura. Have you seen her?"

Shiro looked quizzically at his love for a brief moment. It was as if she was oblivious to the fact that she started a galactic battle and a prince of the most powerful empire was not searching the ends of of the galaxy for her. For someone so incredibly intelligent she was utterly helpless in the face of confrontation.

The Black Paladin simply hummed in response with a small shrug. He began to drift off into his thoughts, negative thoughts that reminded him that they shouldn't be talking because she was scared to love him. Despite him completely loving her.

But those thoughts were not as daunting as the issue at hand. It had been only two days since the palace began preparations for another wormhole and three since the Blade of Marmora's urgent news. Shiro knew he had to tell Pidge about the upsetting announcement but he didn't know how she would handle it.

"If you pout any longer you'll grow more grey hair. It's bad for a little kid like you, you're like six." Katie teased with a cheeky grin.

"You're like two feet. You might as well be six, you are the youngest after all."

"Hey!" She laughed easily but the solemnity of Shiro's thoughts seeped into her. "Seriously, what's wrong?"

"I...It's better if I show you. C'mon, it's about time you got out of bed."

He looked exhausted, as if he could sleep on any surface in a matter of seconds. Perhaps that's what had happened when she had awoken. The young woman reprimanded herself on her terrible timing before giving her first love a gentle touch on his shoulder.

"Hey, whatever it is- we'll handle it. Don't worry."

Her voice was soft and sweet and her eyes were full of hope. Shiro second guessed if he could go through with this anymore, when she sees what happened he won't be able to protect her. But if anyone could make things better in such dark times, it was his beloved and he had to hope that Katie wouldn't break at the sight. He had to have hope in Katie.
