Helen and I finished our homework and headed to the stables.
"So, Becky. After such a disastrous day, wanna hear some good news?" Helen asked as she put a saddle on Peaches, a cream colored horse. "There's this guy and he really likes you."
"Who?" I popped my head up.
"You know him."
I tightened Rocky Road's, my horse, girth. "Who is he?"
"He has blonde hair."
"Dang." I accidentally said aloud.
"Why Dang?" Helen mounted Peaches.
"Uh, never mind." I swung my leg over Rocky Road. "Helen, are you gonna tell me or not?"
"Fine. I'll tell you. It's Brian."
"Brian? Brian Hackett?"
"Yes!" Helen squealed a little.
"Oh."
"What, do you not like him?"
"No, I like him fine. I thought you were gonna say someone else."
"Who?"
"Oh, no one. Never mind." I didn't wanna tell her about Jesse.
"Brian wants to go out with you."
"Why doesn't he ask me himself?"
"Oh, he's going to."
"Becky!!"
I turned Rocky Road around. It was my sister, Jessie. "What?"
"There's someone on the phone!!"
"Okay! I'm coming!" I had Rocky Road take a gallop back to the house. Helen followed me. I jumped off the horse and ran inside. "Hello? Becky Donaldson."
"Hi, Becky. It's Brian."
"Oh, hi."
"Yeah. I was wondering if you, I dunno, maybe wanted.... to go out tonight?"
"With you?" I asked like an idiot.
"Of course with me!!"
"Um, hold on." I covered the receiver. "Hey, Mom!!"
My mom emerged from the other room. "What's the matter?"
"Can I go out tonight?"
"On a school night?"
"Mom, it's Friday."
"Well, okay. Just be back by—"
"Eleven, I know. Thanks, Mom." I waited till Mom was outta ear shot. I put the receiver up to my ear. "You still there?"
"Yup."
"I can make it tonight."
"Great! It's a date!"
"Yeah!"
"Pick you up at seven?"
I looked at the clock. 5:45. "Sure!"
"Where ya live?"
"You've been here before; I live at the stables, remember?"
"Oh, yeah. See you at seven?"
"Seven."
"Bye, Becky."
"Bye, Brian." I hung up and smiled at Helen.
"You're going out with Brian?"
"I guess I am! He's coming at seven, so I gotta shower and do my hair. Can you put the horses away?"
"Sure. I'll do the brushing and everything."
I smiled and hugged her. "Thanks, Helen. You really are a good friend."
"Tell me all about your date when I come back tomorrow."
"I will! Gee, my first date in San Fransisco!" I went upstairs to get ready.
