"Go away!" I told the person on the other side of the door.
"It's Jesse!"
I looked up. "Come in."
Jesse smiled as he closed the door behind him. "Hey."
"Hey..."
"Mind if I sit?"
I shook my head and scooted over a little so he could have plenty of room.
Jesse sat down in the bed. "Are you okay?"
".... I'm okay...." I lied.
"I don't think so. You seem upset."
"So because I'm upset and a girl, I'm supposed to tell you all my problems, right? Like I can't solve em for myself!" I was surprised to hear me say that. Immediately, I apologized. "I'm sorry, Jess. It's just....ugh!" I put my face in my hands and started crying again.
Without saying a word, Jesse moved closer to me and hugged me. I turned so my face was against his chest.
"What's wrong, Becky?"
I sighed and stood up. Ow! I writhed in pain, but still, I had to ask him this question. I limped over to my desk, my back facing Jesse.
"Do you like me?"
"What?"
"Just— answer the question, please. Do you like me?"
"Sure. I like you just fine. You're a very smart girl, Becky. You're pretty, too."
I blushed. He thinks I'm pretty! "Oh."
"Oh? I just gave you a compliment. You're supposed to be thankful."
I turned around. "Jess... I know we just became friends, and we hardly know each other, but," I sighed. "But my Mom says I can't see you."
"Why not?" Jesse walked over to me. He grabbed my hand and led me to my bed. "Sit."
"Why?"
"Because You've got a hurt foot."
I sat down next to him.
"So, why doesn't your mom want us to see each other? Why would she even tell you that? We went to lunch once."
"I dunno. She probably thinks you're a rebel."
"Why would she think that?"
"Oh, I dunno.... maybe because you ride a motorcycle, break the rules, wear leather and tight pants...." it took all my strength from glancing down at his tight pants.
"I like to do that stuff. And cause I am a rebel, I won't listen to her."
"Huh?"
"She's not my parent. I simply won't listen."
"Aren't you worried you'll get punished?"
"Pfft. You're lookin' at a guy who was grounded most of the 70s."
I smiled a little.
Suddenly, Jesse put his hands on my leg with the hurt foot and laid it on his.
I bit my lip as I felt my nose, cheeks, and upper lip get hot.
"Y'sure you're okay?"
I nodded. "I'm fine."
"Again, I'm really sorry."
"It's okay, Jess."
We were silent for a moment until Jesse asked, "what day is it?"
I thought for a moment. "Saturday."
"Oh."
Once again, we were silent. Jesse and I looked at each other, the quickly looked away. Slowly, we turned our heads towards each other. I guess before either of us knew it, we were kissing again.
I stopped abruptly. "We can't do this."
"Why not?"
"Don't you see? My mom said no. I can't disrespect her."
"Have you ever done something wrong, but your Mom has never found out?"
"Yes...."
"It's like that."
"I can't do that, Jesse!"
"Becks..." Jesse sighed. "What if... you were seeing me, but you weren't seeing me?"
"Huh?"
"You'd never come over. I'd always come here. Through that window." He pointed to the window behind him. "We'll meet up at the mall and go from there. Whaddaya say, Becks?"
I looked at him. "I say.... if I get in trouble, you owe me big time."
Jesse smiled and kissed me again.
"Becky!" Connie knocked at my door.
"Connie!" I whispered.
