The doorbell rang as I chased Corky around the house.
"He's mine!!" I heard Jessie and Daphne say together. "YOU?!? I saw him first!!"
"Corky! Get back here!!" I ran to the door and stopped dead in my tracks. "H-Hi.." I smiled, embarrassed, cause I had just grabbed my bra from my little brother.
"Hi."
"What're you doing here, Jesse?"
"I live here, dope!" My little sister responded.
"Not you! Now go do your homework or something."
They reluctantly left.
"I hear you've got termites." Jesse leaned on the door frame.
"Uh-Huh."
"Where are they?"
"The barn..."
"Where's the barn?"
"Over there..." I pointed upstairs to my bedroom.
"Yyyeah.... I'm pretty sure that the barn's outside..."
"He he... Yeah...."
"Sssoooo..... is it... this way?"
"Yeah.. Huh? I mean, I'll show you." I walked past him and he followed me.
"So...." Jesse started talking about half way to the barn. "You and Brian....?"
"Are broken up."
"I'm sorry."
"Yeah. Well, he was kinda a skum bucket anyway."
"What'd he do to you?"
"He disrespected my wishes."
"What were your wishes?"
"Well," we walked into the barn. "I told him I didn't believe in sexual interaction if you're not married. And he said he respected that." I pet Rocky Road on the nose. "But he tried to unzip my dress and so I left him. Then the next day, I went back to give him his pilots jacket and," my voice weakened on the next words. "He was with Casey...." I looked down and the tears started to flow.
"Aww, Becky." Jesse walked closer to me and hugged me.
I cried in his arms, feeling something I had never felt before. It was a weird feeling that I was never able to describe.
Jesse looked down at me and I looked up at him. He smiled and pushed a piece of hair out of my face. He gently tilted my chin up, and, before I knew what was happening, he kissed me. He lowered his hand a little and looked into my tear filled eyes.
"I'm sorry. You seemed like you needed that."
I smiled a little and nodded.
"You think you need another one?"
I nodded, not sure what he said. I was still dazed from the soft, sweet kiss.
Jesse put his hand on my cheek, and gently kissed me again.
I smiled up at him. All of a sudden, I was hurled back into reality. "Why do you care if we have termites?"
"Because, embarrassingly, I am an exterminator."
"Oh... Why?"
"My Mom And Dad are tired of giving me money. Plus, my Dad wants me to take over the family business."
"You have an exterminating business?"
"Yes. It's so embarrassing. That's why, eventually, I wanna break into music."
"You're really good. You could make it."
Jesse shrugged. "Maybe... Hey, I got an idea. Wanna have lunch with me?"
I looked at Rocky Road. Was this just a mercy date? No, it can't be a date, but maybe?
"Becky?"
"Huh?"
"I asked if you'd like to go to lunch with me."
"Oh. Um... oh. Okay."
"Great. Can we get these horses outta here?"
"Why?"
"Cause I gotta spray for termites."
"Oh." I removed the horses to the field.
Jesse told me to wait inside or ride a horse while he sprayed the termites.
I couldn't help but think that he was just getting me lunch because he felt sorry for me. Sorry for me... that's why he kissed me. It wasn't genuine. It was a mercy kiss... Am I really, truly in love? In love with Jesse?
