The air was musky. Filled with the smell of pain and death. Raven winced a little as the wired stick cut her neck a bit. She took in her surroundings. Chain link fence with a pad lock. Cement flooring. Food and water dish that were as dry as a desert. Dogs howling in despair. Yep definitely the pound.
She did a few circles before laying on a tattered blanket in the corner of her cage. Slowly but surely she closed her eyes and let a well needed slumber overcome her.A sudden bam awoke her from her slumber. She looked up to a see a small child slamming all his weight against her kennel. She got up and began snarling at the child for awakening her from her nap. She was always quite peaceful with the humans. Staying out of their way as long as they stayed out of hers, but she would never want to end up with a human. She never wanted to become a pathetic house pet. House pets lost all their sanity and wear perfect threaded collars around their necks to show their belonging to their human. It's sick. Raven snapped back into reality as the child continued to slam his weight against her cage. Fed up with his nonsense she stormed to the front of the cage and slammed her small frame against the chain link wire while snaring and snapping her jaws. The child fell back on his rear end and began to weep. The parents came to their weeping child's call and glared at Raven. She sunk back into the shadows hoping and praying this was all just a nightmare and she would awaken soon underneath her bench.
Later in the evening one of the workers ,she assumed by his attire of clothing, came and opened each kennel door and filled the dogs bowls with a small scoop of kibble and some dirty looking water. He snickered coming closer to Raven's cage putting her on edge more than ever. "Eat Up you little rat. The little stunt you pulled earlier caused you to lose 2 days of life." He smirked before closing and locking her kennel once more before moving onto the next. She sat on her rump and stared at her reflection in the musky water dish wondering what the man meant by she lost 2 days of life. She ate the small amount of food she had before curling back up to sleep again.
Raven was awoken again but not by a bam. By someone whispering and calling out to her. She trotted to the front of her kennel and looked to see it was the German shepherd next to her. "Hey small black and white dog. Pssst" the dog would call to her. She squinted trying to get a better look at this dog but couldn't. She finally decided to reply "Can I help you?" She replied a little more flatly than intended. "What did you do to get 2 days removed from your sentence?" The Shepard questioned. Raven titled her head as she had seen Bronx do earlier that day. "What do you mean sentence?" She presses her about closer to the chain link trying to get a better look once more. "You mean you don't know what happens after 7 days of being here?" She Shepard replied shakily. Raven thought for a moment before shaking her head then realizing the Shepard probably couldn't see her head. "No I don't. Tell me what happens?" The Shepard backed away from her cage and sat on her rump sighing heavily. "They kill you." She replied with deep emotion. Raven jumped back startled by her answer. If she got 2 days wiped off her sentence that means she had 5 days left to live. She let out a low whine. The shepherd spoke up once more. "Unless you get adopted that is..." She trailed off in thought. Raven stood up and got closer to the cage again "You mean in order for me to not die I have to go live as a pathetic pet?" She practically snarled. Before the shepherd could speak once more the dog in the kennel in front of Raven stood and spoke. He was kinda a reddish brown dog with a few wrinkles around the neck. "I'd suggest if you don't want to die to cut the attitude and start being more sociable. Because from what I could see earlier your no good with humans, and no good with humans means your gonna die." The male replied with no emotion. Raven sighed he was right. She had to become more sociable. As soon as she was adopted she would escape and be back to her normal life. "You know what your right! Thanks.." she trailed off realizing she never caught his name. "Zeus." He replied gruffly before laying back down with his head resting on his paws. "oh oh and I'm Zuma!" She Shepard whom she had also been speaking to spoke up. "I'm Raven" the jack Russell spoke wagging her tail slightly before returning to the tattered blanket once more for the night. So the plan was made. Raven was to act like a cute little house pet and get adopted then escape back to the streets. If only it were that easy...
