Wedding plans were hard to accomplish with Evelina's limited mobility with her wrists. In spite of the bandages being off, the scars and pain remained. Due to the limited mobility, it gave Evelina way more time to think, which was far more detrimental than beneficial. She couldn't help but think that she was letting down her faith by being pregnant out of wedlock. Not just that, but the fact that she'd lied to save their lives. A marriage was meant to be built on honesty with the promise of safety. Theirs was going to be built on neither. The guilt was far more intense than she'd ever imagined.
"I still cannot believe that you did not know you were pregnant." Nakita shook her head as she washed up some dishes. "Man oh man."
Evelina smiled at her friend. The comment didn't help bring her thoughts out of the dump; it just dug them further down.
Nakita noticed the shadow over her friend's face. She'd sensed the gloominess on her for awhile now and although she'd avoided bringing it up, she knew she couldn't keep avoiding it. She had to pry for the information to help make things better. She stopped washing the dishes and joined Evelina by the table. "You know that you are going to make a wonderful mother."
Evelina sighed. "I know, but I can't help but feel this wasn't how things were supposed to happen. I mean you know where I stand on the whole sex before marriage thing. And now look, I'm pregnant and not married."
"But you are getting married soon. Not everything can be planned and prevented. You are the one that always says that Jesus will forgive anything that you can throw at him. If that is really and truly the case, then you really have nothing to worry about. Mistakes happen. There is no way that he would not forgive you for that." Nakita reminded confidently.
Evelina watched her friend's eyes carefully, as if trying to find some more truth in them. She needed the reassurance. "It just all is happening so fast. And not in the order I thought it would. Everything's so complicated."
"These things happen for a reason. They might not be the way we want them to be and they obviously do not always come in the order we expect, but you have to just take it all with a grain of salt and keep moving forward. I will stand by you all of the way through this." Nakita rubbed her friend's hand before getting up and moving back to the dishes.
Evelina followed her to the sink to help. The worry lines in her forehead began to lighten up. "You're right. I guess I'm just overwhelmed."
"And tired, too. You are trying to grow a baby, plan a wedding, and recover from a traumatic experience. It is no wonder why you are stressed out and over thinking everything." Nakita rinsed off a dish and put it on a towel to dry off.
Evelina leaned against the counter to watch. Her wrists couldn't handle the extra weight of the dishes quite yet. Physical therapy was beginning to help, but she still wasn't to her full range of motion. The therapist had said it could be years before she completely regained all of her motion without being in pain. It had also been implied that cold or rainy weather could bring about hints of pain because of the nerve damage. She would continue to live with the memory of that horrific day probably for the rest of her life.
Nakita looked up at her for a moment, noticing her quietness. "You okay?"
Evelina pulled her gaze back up to Nakita. "I'm just worried, ya know. It's all happening so fast."
Nakita walked away and started putting away some of the already dry dishes. "I know, Ev."
"I mean, I'm getting married already! Sure, it's not necessarily the wedding that I had thought I'd have, but I'm getting married! It's just a little crazy, ya know?" A rush of unsteadiness nearly knocked her down. She held onto the counter to steady herself, wincing at the pressure shooting up her wrists. She hoped the action remained unnoticed, but within moments Nakita was by her side.
