The screams echoed through the room. Joey stopped mid-sentence and stood. Anger lit him up. He rushed to the cell door, his fingers white knuckling the chilly metal. "Davy! Get the hell in here! Face me like a man!"
Zach stayed seated on the floor, equally tense, but conserving his energy. He watched Joey release the bars and pace back and forth like a caged animal.
Joey shook his head, unable to calm himself down. "I should be the one out there, not her."
"There's not much we can do until they let us out of here." Zach slowly raised himself from the ground, careful not to put pressure on his painfully broken fingers.
Joey turned to watch him. He could see the pain in the man's face. "Are you going to be able to fight like that?"
The defiance lit up Zach's expression. "You wanna test me and find out?"
A smile toyed at Joey's lips, not quite allowing them to turn up to complete the act. He turned back to the cell door. Another scream came from the other room. There was no denying it was Evelina. The blood in his veins felt like it'd turned to ice. Part of him felt sorry for whoever would come through that door to let him out, he'd pound him to the ground with the anger that was radiating through him. There'd be no mercy; no act of kindness.
His nostrils flared as he turned his back to the bars and leaned against them. "A real man would face a real man, not hurt an innocent woman, Davy." He yelled out to his brother. He knew Davy was prideful and didn't lack a backbone; it wouldn't take long to get him in the room if he kept insulting him.
A loud thump echoed as the door to the room opened up. Gus walked up to the cage, fumbling with the keys to open up the cage. "Your brother says a real man doesn't take shit from an uninjured fool."
Joey backed up only a few inches to give the man space to open the door. "And you know he won't follow his own words, Gus, so what's the point in telling me them." Quietly, he cracked his knuckles preparing them to slam into the man's body. He'd fought Gus before and overpowered him, and this time he had help.
Gus grunted and pushed the door open. "Get moving."
Joey stood tall and began walking out, pausing to wait for Zach to catch up. He knew they weren't expecting a fight, otherwise they would have sent more men to escort them out. He didn't care about their damn expectations though; he was ready to beat the odds. The second Gus looked over at Zach, Joey ran at the man's gut. He picked him up and rammed him to the ground. There was no keeping him off of him. He pounded his fists into his face. He could feel the man's fingers lace around his throat and try choking him off of him.
Gus took the beating, but only for a few minutes. His mass was enough to overpower most. He pushed up at Joey and threw him off of him. He started to fumble with his gun in the small of his back. The moment he got it out and ready to use Joey had jumped up and knocked it out of his grip. He threw his fists into the man's body, forcing him against the wall. He had been all pent up energy and it showed with the speed he elicited upon the brute. He could feel a hand on his shoulder and he jumped back swinging.
Zach jumped out of the way of the man's fist. "Whoa! It's just me."
It took a moment for Joey to recognize him. He forced his breath to slow down. He was too amped to feel his own pain. Adrenaline coursed through him in a speed nothing could match.
"I think he's had enough." Zach nodded over to the man lying unconscious on the floor. "Save your strength."
"There's only a half a dozen or so more to get through." Joey calmed his wild rage. "It's doable."
