It only took minutes to be brought back right to where she had started. Evelina tried pulling her arm out of her captor's grip, fighting him at every step and forcing him to drag her most of the way. "Let go of me!"

"You shouldn't have tried to escape." He reminded her, yanking her back into the room where she had left Joey. He tossed her to the ground a few yards away from the unpleasant sight in front of her.

Evelina couldn't stop herself from gasping. The sight in front of her made her feel sick. Davy hadn't taken Joey's distraction very well. His men had tied her husband's wrists together and had him hanging from a meat hook. His feet were barely able to brush the ground. They had clearly beaten him during her absence, and were obviously not finished with him. He looked like he was in pain, but determined, like he could — no — would take more to keep them away from her.

His eyes met hers and something inside of him seemed to break. He had expected her to escape, not to be caught again. She had failed him. He knew he couldn't do much more to keep them away from her.

Evelina prayed that Jimmy would get there quickly. She already feared that they didn't have much time left before that extra time would run out. Life was being cut shorter than they had planned, and each passing second was one less then what they had left.

Davy walked toward her with a purpose. His pale, blue eyes reflected the iciness of his heart trying to cut through her less-than-hard shell and into her soul, attempting to terrify her. It worked well. She was definitely terrified of him; not that she could let that show.

"The only thing running did was temporarily postpone your fate and give me more time to think of ways to hurt you." He glared at her.

"It bought me some time. You're not going to get away with this." Evelina returned his glare with a glare of her own. She was sure it was weak, but she stuck with the attitude and refused to back down.

Davy snorted, bending down to her level. He watched her for a moment as if searching her soul for the answer to a question he had yet to ask. "You seem to be pretty smart, little, working girl."

Ev's breaths were shaky as she tried to force herself to be calm. She imagined her eyes were much wider than she preferred. She kept quiet, refusing to say anything to this man.

"Which begs the question, why'd you do something so stupid as running?" His eyes narrowed. He swallowed casually when she didn't give him an answer. He stood up and turned toward his brother. "She's too loyal to have made the decision to run. She wouldn't have left you, Joey. You're way to damn important to her."

Ev swallowed hard, unsure where Davy was going with this conversation. What was he trying to figure out? What did he think he'd have to prove? She could see the toxic wheels spinning in his mind, simply trying to figure out something that really didn't need to be figured out.

Davy turned back to Evelina. "I think he ordered you to run." He bent down to her level again, balancing on his heels to keep from tipping. "I was trying to think of what price to make you pay for that idiotic act, but I believe that both of you should pay for the mistake. That's what it was, right? A mistake?"

Not knowing how to respond to the question, Ev looked over to Joey for guidance. She searched his eyes for the answer. He gently nodded to her. It was all she needed with Davy breathing down on her. That simple gesture comforted her, knowing that he was still watching out for her.
