Months passed by slowly, allowing the healing process to take its time. Nobody had ever said relationships and breakups were easy, but Evelina had never felt one harder than this one. She'd been more affected by her breakup with Joey then she'd ever felt when her engagement had been called off. It was like they weren't supposed to be apart. She tried to forget him. She tried to move on, but it's like it wasn't possible. She began overworking herself. Every shift she could get, she took. She had no social life. She could see that Nakita was worried, but she ignored it.
Ev began feeling more run down and sick. All she really wanted to do was sleep and throw up. After weeks of Nakita expressing her concern, Evelina decided to make a doctor appointment. If it eased her friend's mind, then she was willing to take the time to ensure that she was healthy enough. She figured that she was just overworking herself, but it was the only way she could keep her mind off of Joey. Fatigue was a small price to pay over sickening depression.
Doctor Colton Wiley had taken a few tests, but he had seemed pretty convinced with knowing what was going on with her. He had left the room to get the results, leaving Ev alone with her thoughts. She checked her watch and leaned against the chair impatiently. This felt like a waste of time. She could be working right now, not wasting her time waiting for an answer to a test she didn't need to know the result of. The time waiting left her mind to wander. She hated allowing it to do its own thing. It always wandered back to Joey and the time they had together. It was like hell on earth. She tried to trust that God would take away the pain, but it didn't seem like it was going anywhere.
Doctor Wiley came back into the room and took a seat at his desk. He typed a few things into the computer in front of him. "Miss Jones, I'm going to write you a prescription to help you not feel so sick. It should help you with keeping your food down, too. Realistically, you should be just about over this mourning sickness, but everyone's different."
Evelina shook her head in confusion. Her brows knitted together as she sat up straighter, straining to make sense of his diagnosis. "Mourning sickness? I don't understand. What's going on with me?"
He paused his notes to face her. He looked astonished that she didn't know. "By my calculations, you should be entering your second trimester of being pregnant. Congratulations."
"I'm what?" Ev's eyes couldn't hide her disbelief. The words tumbled out of her mouth as shock filled her face. He can't be right. He just can't be right. There's absolutely no way.
"You're just shy of twenty weeks pregnant." He told her slowly. Confidently.
"I can't be pregnant! And even if I was, there's no way I'm five months along. I mean, I've put on a few extra pounds, but not nearly enough to be pregnant. I'd be showing way more than this." She stood up and pulled her loose shirt tight around her waist. She looked down at her small belly forming. Her breathing started to increase and panic filled her eyes. She sat back down sharply and began thinking back. It hadn't already been five months since she'd been with Joey, had it? She couldn't remember. There was absolutely no way she could be pregnant.
"It's okay, Evelina. Being pregnant is a natural thing for women. It's only your first time. It's normal for women to not realize it at first. It's more common than you think to be almost five months along and not realize it. Not everyone is the same when they begin to show." He reassured her.
"It's not okay! I'm not even married. I can't be pregnant." Tears filled her eyes. She looked down at her folded hands. "I don't even know if I could get in contact with the father."
Doctor Wiley got up and put his hand on her shoulder. "Everything will be alright." He knelt down to her eye level. "Are you going to keep this baby? There are other options. If you're not sure you want this pregnancy, you do have a couple of choices. You can either have an abortion and terminate the fetus, or you can carry to term and put it up for adoption." He told her softly.
Ev's face shot upright, completely infuriated by his suggestion. She stood up, nearly toppling over the doctor. "I'm going to have this baby. I'm going to keep him or her. I will not go through an abortion!" She told him sternly.
Slowly, Doctor Wiley rose to his feet. "If that's what you want, then I will support that decision. I'll be here with you through the whole process. You'll do fine and you'll be a good mother." He smiled at her, not fazed by her reaction. "There's no need to be nervous about any of this. There are support groups to help you along, too."
Evelina nodded quickly. She wanted to be out of this place. She needed to think. She needed to be able to breathe. "Is that all that you need to talk with me about?"
"Yes, for now." He took his seat by his computer once again as he scribbled out something on a piece of paper. "Here's your prescription. Make an appointment in about a month or so and we can make sure everything's going fine. Other than that, call me if you have any questions, but you're free to go."
Ev thanked him before leaving. He had his nurse give her a packet of papers and instruct her not to do anything too strenuous. She was instructed to rest more, but she couldn't keep doing what she was doing.
She had walked out of the clinic in a daze, not paying attention to anything around her. She was scared and confused. How could she possibly do this alone? Did she dare try to find Joey? Would he even listen to her?
Evelina's fingers streaked through her hair as she sighed. She didn't want to tell Nakita yet. She didn't want her to have another reason to worry about her. She stuffed the papers in her purse while she walked to the pharmacy a few blocks away. It was a mediocre day outside. There was a chance that she could get rained on, but that was the last thing on her mind right now.
As she neared the pharmacy, she pulled out some money and the prescription papers to give to the clerk at the drive thru window. She didn't want to walk inside and be greeted by a bunch of people. The clerk had given her a funny look at the window, but she didn't really care. Being judged for going through the drive thru on foot was nothing compared to how she thought her parents would have thought about her right now if they were alive to see her.
She swallowed two of the pills like the instructions said as soon as she got the meds. Carelessly, she shoved the pill bottle into her purse and walked away. She couldn't stop thinking about what kind of a home she'd be bringing this baby into. She knew Nakita would help her out when she could, but this wasn't her burden to bear. This was something that she had to learn to deal with. She didn't know the first thing about being a mother. Another sigh escaped Ev's mouth as she shook her head. She was an idiot for getting into this mess.
A black sedan screeched to a halt alongside of her. Two men got out in sync and shoved a gag in her mouth, zip tying her hands in the process. Ev was stunned by the quickness of everything, but there was no way she'd be taken without a fight. She wriggled her body around, throwing a few kicks until they zip tied her ankles together and tossed her into the trunk.
There had been no time to put up a fight. She was being taken and there was nothing that she could do to escape. Not only was her life in danger, her newly found out baby was in danger, too. Maybe she wouldn't be learning what being a mother was all about after all. It scared her more than being kidnapped; a thought that never would have entered her mind beforehand.
