Ev assumed only minutes had passed by before she regained consciousness, but those minutes had been long enough to allow unthinkable actions to be done to her husband. Davy had ripped out any stitching that Doctor Wiley had done. Joey was shaking nearly uncontrollably from shock and being chilled.
Ev couldn't imagine the screams that she had just missed; the torture that must have been reverberating around Joey's body. She felt sick to her stomach. The fact that he was still conscious after such an ordeal continued to reveal how strong her husband really was.
"I've always thought about being a doctor." Davy was casually speaking, oblivious to the agony he was causing. "Saving lives never really intrigued me though."
"Leave him alone... just leave him alone." Ev whimpered from her position on the floor. She began to try to push herself up. Her head was throbbing.
"Would you just shut up!" He glared at her, shaking the blood off of his hands. His focus snapped back over to Joey.
Evelina gathered as much strength as she could and stood up. She walked slowly and purposefully toward Joey, taking in the blood oozing out of his ripped up body. She passed by Davy, feeling his gaze heavily on her back as he tried to figure out what she was up to. She looked down at Joey. Tears dripped down her face as she gathered up the sheets and covered his shaking body, carefully tucking them under the mattress to keep him warmer.
Quietly, she turned and faced Davy, setting herself between the two men. Determination lit up her face along with a risky boldness. "You're not going to hurt him anymore."
"And who's going to stop me? You?" He cocked an eyebrow.
Ev's eyes darted back and forth between his eyes. She looked for any weakness, but didn't catch any. More tears dripped down her face as she nodded her head, aggravating the splitting headache she had. "Mhmm, I am."
"I'd love to see you try, working girl." He egged her on, clearly doubting any ability she had at stopping him.
Evelina revealed a revolver hanging loosely next to her side. She had known Joey always kept one under his side of the mattress for emergencies and she had taken that advantage by grabbing it. It was a sneaky, risky move, but one she deemed necessary. She snapped the gun up in front of her, aiming it directly at Davy. Her aim surprisingly steady for her uncertainty.
"You have caused us so much pain and fear in such a short amount of time. I don't want to kill you. I really, really don't want to kill you, but if you don't leave us alone..." Her voice dropped off. She wanted him dead, but the actual action of doing it wasn't so desirable.
Davy watched her for a moment. An unexpected laugh rumbled out of him. "You couldn't shoot me even if you wanted to."
"Don't test me." Evelina's tears had stopped, leaving in its wake fearful, wide eyes.
Davy walked closer to her. His face solemn and serious. He grabbed the gun and pulled it to his chest. "Pull the trigger." He locked eyes with her and waited patiently for her to shoot him.
Ev hesitated. Her eyes flickered back and forth between his eyes and where the gun was aimed. Her finger felt like it was locked on the trigger, incapable of moving to shoot or pull away. She wasn't just aiming a toy gun at him; this one was capable of taking a life. Capable of killing him.
"Do it. Come on, Evelina! This is what you've been waiting for, isn't it?" He growled at her, his voice growing louder and more demanding. "Just pull that damn trigger. Think of all that hell that I've just put you through! Hmm? You remember don't you?" He egged her on, waiting to see if she'd do anything. He pushed away from her and walked across the room. He stared at the wall for a moment then turned back to her.
