Jimmy watched silently from the door as Evelina sat on Joey's bed. He couldn't deny the relief and joy that had been bestowed upon the couple just from seeing each other after Ev's afternoon meeting with the officer. He'd never witnessed that before. He'd seen the joy from a soldier's girl meeting him at the airport, a bittersweet reunion that would last for a short time. This was different though. Sweeter perhaps.
He shifted Rose to his other arm. She had fallen asleep on his shoulder after being reunited with her parents. She smelled like baby shampoo. Downs' wife had clearly given the little girl a bath before bringing her to the hospital.
He couldn't help but think about his future while standing there. He'd never allowed himself to think about a family or peacefully settling down. Maybe it still wasn't in the cards for him, but he couldn't help ponder it.
Holding Rose brought him back to his thoughts about Nakita. Regardless of how his life twisted and turned in the future, he knew he wouldn't drift far from this precious child. He made a promise to tell her all about her Auntie Kita. And with an uncertain future ahead, that was the best promise that he could offer.
