There it was, in the middle of the circle of teenagers. One of the only things that could get me to change my mind. It was a red piece of paper, with writing on it that read, “Ret is our savior. The Room is a lie”. “Where did you find this?” I ask Tiffany, stepping away from the rest of them and pulling her aside. “It was resting on a pipe; Dani reached down for it, picked it up, then we closed the doors and took it over here” She replies, glancing back at the group. “I was there when that boy was shot in the Main Living Space, and I know that that name was the one never to be spoken by anyone” She says, raising her voice out of frustration and walking back over to them. “I was there too but...What does the second part mean? ‘The Room is a lie’?” I ask, also walking over and now everyone’s attention is focused on the two of us. “I don’t know, and I’m certainly not brave enough to find out” Tiffany replies, walking over and picking up the paper, shoving it into her pocket. “I’ll keep this same until we need it” She continues. “When would we need it?” Leixia4 asks, now joining in on the conversation. “I don’t know alright? But I’m keeping it just in case” Tiffany snaps back. The group goes silent and we all just stand, waiting for someone to declare another action. “Well, I think that we should all go back to our apartments and think about this, then meet up tomorrow at lunch and discuss” Callista2 suggests, walking over and standing beside me, obviously ready to leave. The others mutter in agreement and one by one walk off toward wherever they live. “Let’s go” I say to Callista2, as I turn around and start walking sluggishly back to our room. She follows closely, but looks back occasionally at the elevator. We arrive to our apartment only minutes later, and Chris3 is lounging in the hallway with a book. He looks up for a second and waves before standing up. “Hey guys” He says as we approach, but his expression changes when he sees our faces closely. “What’s wrong?” He follows up with, and his facial features changing to show sadness. “Nothing we just...” Callista2’s voice trails off as she stares at the ground. I mouth “I’ll tell you later” to Chris3 and he nods as I silently urge Callista2 to our door. I twist the knob and we step inside together. I lead her over to the couch and she sits down in the middle. “What are we going to do?” She whispers to me, and I take a seat next to her. “What do you mean? There’s nothing we can do” I reply. “But there is” She says, looking up at me with her beautiful brown eyes. “What?” I ask quizzically. “I can write a letter to The Guild, maybe they’ll respond” She says, getting a little happier with each word. I just nod along, knowing that The Guild won’t respond to that letter in a million years, but I hate to see her sad. She leans forward and grabs a pen and paper and starts writing, while I sit next to her, thinking about the note in the elevator shaft. ‘The Room is a lie’. That part is making my stomach turn, I mean what if Chris3 was right and no one actually dies there? I mean it could just be a rehabilitation room for people that fail the tests. Right? And what if the person who wrote the note was lying and they DO kill you there? So many thoughts whizzing around in my head, but the most prominent out of all of them, stands the one of Dani.
