5- In Which There is Saving
For the first time in the month since Trunks and Pan had arrived on Vegeta-Sei it was raining. Rain on earth ws no big deal, but on Vegeta-sei, it was rare. Pan had practically danced all the way to the bakery as Trunks walked her because she was so excited to see the rain. It made things feel almost normal...
Although Pan was giddy about the rain, it seemed as if none of the other Saiyans were. Zohl and Lex grumbled about it, stating that it would slow the business down for the day... And they were right. It was a dreadfully slow day as the rain pelted against the windows and roof.
By the time it was closing time, the bakery hadn't had much business at all, and the streets were covered with water. Pan stayed inside the warm shelter of the bakery, waiting for Trunks. He was running a bit late than usual, but Pan wasn't too worried. She assumed that it was probably just the weather that was making him late.
When Pan saw someone stopping in front of the bakery doors, she smiled brightly, and waved to Lex and Zohl before going out. Who was waiting for her, wasn't Trunks at all...
"Hi..." the man greeted, his smile thin. He pushed up the glasses resting on the bridge of his nose and nodded towards Pan. She had seen him a few times before, with Trunks and his squad... "My name is Kabuto, it's nice to meet you," he bowed politely.
"I'm Pan," she bowed back, her eyes still watching him curiously.
"Trunks was sent on a last minute errand for Shika, our boss, and so he asked me to walk you home," Kabuto told her. "I hope it's okay, he was worried about you having to wait long for him."
Pan couldn't help her small smile at the sweet gesture... Trunks was worried about her waiting for him...
"It's nice of you to walk me instead," Pan told Kabuto.
"Oh, it's not a problem," he said, pulling out an umbrella for them to walk under. "Trunks has been such a great help since he's started working with us, the least I could do was walk you home."
"Well, thanks," Pan gave him a small smile as they began walking.
Pan glanced around, noticing that the streets were rather empty. It really was a shame that the Saiyans didn't like the rain...
She glanced at Kabuto out of the corner of her eye as they walked. Trunks had told her all about his squadron, but now that she was thinking about it... He hadn't mentioned Kabuto much at all. If Pan had to pick, she would say that the one Trunks would trust the most would be Kiba. Sure, he complained loudly about Kiba all of the time, but she knew he liked him... So then why would Trunks send someone who he didn't talk much about to walk her home...?
A small shiver ran up Pan's spine, and suddenly she wasn't feeling too good. She turned her eyes from Kabuto, trying to see anyone on the street, but there was none. The rain really was keeping everyone away... A small tremor of fear washed through Pan as she sensed Kabuto tightening his hold on the umbrella. Her heart was banging against her chest.
Taking a deep breath, Pan stopped walking and Kabuto walked a few feet before noticing she wasn't following. Rain poured on top of her, but Pan didn't care. Kabuto glanced back at her, his dark eyes blank and emotionless.
"It's not too far from here," Pan told him, trying her best to not sound as worried as she really was. "I'll walk the rest of the way by myself."
The corner of Kabuto's lips twitched, "that wouldn't be very nice of me."
"Really, I'm fine," Pan said sternly.
"I insist," his eyes hardened on her. "Now come on, you're getting soaked."
