“I understand.” He said. I took a breath of relief. I thought Riker was going to tell me never to talk to him again and slam the door in my face. “I thought about it and realized I was moving too fast for you, even for me. I like you, Hayley. I will never leave you. I made you a promise and I won’t ever dare to break it. I’m glad I’m your friend.” Riker finished. I threw my arms around him.
“I’m so happy you said that.” I sobbed into his chest. Riker smoothed out my hair.
“I’m sorry about last night, too.” He murmured into my ear.
“It’s ok. It wasn’t your fault.” I said. We continued to hug.
“We should just forget about what happened in the garden last night.” Riker said.
“Yeah, totally. It’s better if things aren’t awkward between us.” I said, trying to fake a smile.
“Absolutely.” He said. “So, you wanna come inside and play some video games?” Riker offered, gesturing towards the door.
“I’d love to, but Jamie text me about 20 times this morning. I’m guessing she’s mad that I haven’t talked to her in about 3 days, so I was gonna go to her house and make sure she knows I’m alive.” I said.
“It’s fine.” Riker said, looking down.
“Tomorrow we could defiantly do something. I’ll call you tonight, or if I need you.” I said, walking down the pathway, back to my shitty car.
“Alright sounds good. I’ll talk to you later.” He called.
“Bye Riker.” I said. Then I drove away. I was so glad we were still friends and made up, but somehow I couldn’t forget about our kiss. I know we decided we should forget about it so things wouldn’t be awkward, but I couldn’t. There was just something about it. Was it the sparks I felt? Or the lust that overtook me? I had no clue what I should do. Shaking my head, I focused on my driving.
About and hour later, my car slowed down and stopped.
“Shit!” I shouted, slamming my car door. The freeway I always took to get to Jamie’s house was closed, and there was no other way to get there, so I had to use my instincts. Apparently, my instincts are screwed up because here I was, looking at my broken down car in the middle of nowhere.
I propped open the front of the car, but had to back up because of the amount of smoke coming out. I was so mad, I kicked the tire.
“UGHHHH!” I screamed. “Why does the bad stuff always happen to me!”
I trudged to the other side of the vacant road and sat down on the ground. Pulling out my cell phone, I dialed my mom. It rang 5 times before her voicemail picked up. I tried calling Jamie, Kelsey & Caleb, but they didn’t pick up either. What were they doing that was so much more important?
Scrolling through my contacts list, I stopped at Riker’s and dialed his number. It started ringing.
“Pick up. Pick up.” I whispered to myself. After it rang a few more times before his familiar voice answered.
“Hey, this is Riker.”
“Riker! Oh my gosh! I-“ I was cut off by the rest of his voice mail.
“I’m not here right now, so please leave a message. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can. Bye.”
No words could describe how pissed off I was. I was literally debating if I should smash my phone on the ground. Then, someone else popped up in my mind. Should I call them? Or should I sit out here until it gets dark and risk getting eaten by who know what?
I decided to go with my gut. I dialed the number and waited.
“Hello?”
“Hey it’s Hayley. I need a favor.”
