Three days later, I was standing in front of my closet admiring the dress I bought when we went to the mall. Today was the day of the summer bash and I was nervous. Like throw up nervous.
The dress was beautiful. It was the perfect balance of color and sparkle. The top of the dress was covered in silver and blue sequins and had the most flattering sweetheart neckline. The bottom of the dress was a lovely navy blue silk that flowed whenever I moved. The dress was absolutely perfect and I couldn’t wait to get into it.
“What are you waiting for? Put it on!” Jamie’s voice from behind scared me. I turned around to see her standing there in the red dress she bought, which, to be honest, looked awesome on her.
“I-I’m nervous.” I said, stumbling over my words.
“About what?” Jamie asked, her face in a questioning scrunch that made me giggle slightly.
“I’m scared that Riker won’t want me. I’m scared he’ll laugh at how pathetic I look and leave me crying by myself on the floor.” I blurted before I could stop myself. Jamie put her hands on my shoulders and shook me a little.
“Are you crazy?! This is Riker we’re talking about here. And just so you know, he’s totally head over heals in love with you.” She said. I looked down.
“How do you know?” I asked. Jamie sighed, and started pacing the room.
“I know because of the way he looks at you. The way his eyes light up every time you smile. The way he puts his arm around you and the way that he’s always there for you when you need him the most. If you haven’t realized Hayley, Riker loves you. I’ve realized it, and I have never seen anything like it.” She said. I stood quiet and thought about what she said.
“To be honest, I’m a little jealous.” Jamie murmured. I looked up at her.
“What? Why?” I asked.
“I feel as if Caleb doesn’t love me like the way Riker loves you.” She whispered. I walked over to my best friend who now had a sad look on her face.
“Don’t be silly. He does, he’s just afraid to show it, though. He hints it with the small things he does. Trust me.” I said. Jamie looked up at me.
“I’ll trust you if you trust me. And if you get dressed.” Jamie smiled. I stuck my tongue out at her.
“Fine. I trust you and your Riker instinct.” I said, making me and Jamie laugh.
“It’s not a ‘Riker’ instinct. It’s a love instinct and yay! Now, go get dressed! Your fate is waiting for you.” She said. I rolled my eyes.
“You’re a total wacko.” I said, grabbing my dress and heading for the bathroom.
“Yes, but I’m also your best friend.”
