It had been a week since my audition for Blue Panda. They told me it would be a couple of days before they would let me know. Obviously, a couple of days meant something else entirely to the band. But as the days turned to night without a single phone call, I began to doubt. I went into the audition thinking that I had it, considering Chase Matthews had already said I had a beautiful voice. So as I stood on the stage, guitar in my hand, strumming the last chords, I didn’t think I could not have had it.

“Wow,” was all Ian said as he leaned over and whispered something to Chase. Chase looked like he was contemplating something before nodding. Here we go, I thought. My chance at stardom. So when Chase said, “Thank you, Riley,” and turned to talk with the rest of the band, I couldn’t help but feel my stomach drop. Maybe my I have it attitude portrayed on stage. I just smiled and made my way off stage.

“We’ll let you know in a couple of days,”  Lucas Bert, the bass guitarist, said. I nodded my head slightly and exited the door. I passed by the next contestant, watching as her eagerness displayed about her face. She looked at me and gave me a reassuring smile.

“I bet you did great,” she said.

But as I sat down at the lunch table with Maddox and his crew, I couldn’t help but think I didn’t do so well. I couldn’t help but think that I had jinxed it. I had the wrong mindset and now I was paying the price. I lost my dream.

“Dude, that game was amazing,” Waymon shouted, jerking me from my thoughts. He sat down in the empty seat next to me. Maddox smiled as he took a bite of the burger he got from the joint across the street. No one dared to try the mystery meat from the cafeteria. Something about green meat makes the stomach churn.

“Thanks, man,” Maddox said. I felt his eyes roam over to me. It had been a week since my running to the bathroom and eating lunch with the cat brains. When Maddox found out about it, he was furious.

“Remember our agreement?” he had said. I flinched as he hands clasped around my wrists. His face was mere inches from mine. I nodded slightly. “What did I say would happen if you broke the agreement?” His saliva plastered my face. I cowered as his face continued to close the space between us.

“It would happen again,” I whispered, pressing myself against the wall of his room, hoping to extend the closeness.

When I decided to eat lunch in the science lab, I knew that Maddox would find out about it. However, I didn’t think that it would have been as fast as it was.

“Did your mom make your famous ‘Winning’ cake?” Waymon asked.

“Hell, yeah. Too bad somebody wasn’t there,” Maddox accused.

I assumed he was talking to me, but I didn’t look up from my sandwich. Since my spontaneous decision to skip out on dinner and make something of myself, Maddox made it known that I wasn’t going to get let off easy. Everyday, I was sure it was going to happen again. The day in his room terrified me. I’d flinch whenever he grabbed my hand in the hallway and jerk away whenever he’d lean into kiss me. Though this irritated him, he let it slide, thankfully.
