At the break of dawn on an early Tuesday morning, Sera was whipping away the sleep that still resided in her eyes as she walked into the main building of the dolphin sanctuary. Dressed in her usual attire being her yellow t-shirt with the logo of the refuge, a pair of khaki shorts, and her white windbreaker to stay warm in the slightly cool atmosphere of the early mornings, she watched the hustle already occurring inside.
A handful of workers were inside the main building already as they were tending to the tanks and the early morning feeding times. Inside of the main building was the small food court the designed just the year prior for the workers and guests who wished to eat on the premises, as well as a little stand with t-shirts and plush dolphin toys where all the profits went towards funding the creatures.
But towards the back wall was the large aquarium the sanctuary was immensely excited to put in as one of their final exhibit installments. Fish from all over the Pacific Ocean rested in the large tank, all coming from the Maui Aquarium as a welcome gift to joining Hawaii in their conservation projects.
It contained an entire ecosystem of fish but lacking large predators such as sharks that were fairly common in tanks as such, but the sanctuary had decided against it. No animals that did not need help would be kept inside the sanctuary beside Waverly by choice, and the fish in the tanks being offspring of past generations in the Maui Aquarium.
A blue hue cast itself over the entire inside of the building as the rays of light from the rising sun gleamed through the glass. Mornings in Hawaii were always magical, something that encouraged Sera to get up for almost every day as motivation for when she went to tend to her dolphins.
"Aloha kakahiaka, Sera." Turning her head to the main doors as they were being unlocked, the manager, Nalani, a pure Polynesian middle-aged woman spoke to her with a smile. "Waverly missed you at feeding time yesterday. She didn't play at all."
Waverly was a dolphin that forever stayed loyal to Sera, only having a connection with the young girl as no one else was able to reach that same level. They had a deep connection that was unexplainable to anyone who watched. It was unique and uncommon, but something Sera cherished more than anything.
Sera rolled her eyes as a chuckled escaped her lips followed by a yawn. "Sorry, long day the last couple of days. Good morning."
"Don't worry, just make sure you meet up with Maverick over by the turtles. Foster is out of town for the week so Mav needs all the help he can get with that lot." Nalani explained as she rolled over the cleaning supplies to the aquarium, getting ready to wipe the class down.
"Aye aye, captain," Sera said with a smile as she skipped over to the metal staircase that leads to the overlooking balcony that connected to the observatory where Beau and Nala were located.
The indoor balcony connected to the outside led Sera on her way as she turned right, finding the unique door with the keypad lock, punching in the pin before disappearing behind the large metal door. Immediately she was met by more people, but this time it was dolphin specialists that were in earlier than usual, observing Nala and Beau in their pools down below.
