"I don't think you understand how much that old man loves you."
A few hours had passed since arriving at Ricky's home, three people turning into two as the elder went to bed to leave Sera and Orion to themselves. They sat in the living room with cups of coffee in their hands as their gazes were directed towards the flashing screen as an old movie played on the television.
The night mostly consisted of Ricky's stories about Orion growing up and how he was a mischievous kid, nothing to Sera's surprise. Whether it was stories about Orion riding his skateboard in rush hour traffic or drawing a man's genitals in a girls coloring book, it left Sera laughing until she couldn't breathe. As for Orion, it left him red in the face as he continuously hid it in the corner of his arm.
Even though they were both tired, they continued talking even with the rising of the sun just being a few hours away. Sera loved that she was learning more about Orion, also if it were silly stories. But threw them she discovered the little details that didn't mean much to most, but the most to her.
His favorite ice cream flavor was cotton candy, the oddest and childish flavor one could ever think of. But to him, it was like finding a goldmine when the only ice cream parlor that carried it was twenty miles away from town. She learned that he loved boxing growing up, but it didn't stop his mom from enrolling him into ballet classes, her excuse being it helped with his footwork.
Through the words of someone who was there since the day Orion was born, Sera saw him in a light no one else dared to do. It made her see him.
"What do you mean?" Sera asked after sipping her coffee.
"Uncle Rick...he just, he loves you like one of his own. Even when I moved back just a couple weeks ago all he could talk about was this dolphin lover who bought all his Beach Boys records." Orion laughed as a giant grin grew on Sera's face.
"Well, I mean, I've known him since I moved here. He was the first person on the island my parents befriended, and the rest just turned to history. He's like a grandfather to me almost. Reminds me of my childhood." She explained.
"You never talk about," Orion stated as he leaned back onto the sofa, his feet propping up on the coffee table as he got comfortable. "We always talk about my stories and my experiences whether it's through that leather sack of skin or my tats. How about we switch it up?"
Sera shrugged. "I mean, there's nothing interesting honestly. I had a pretty normal childhood besides moving across the country let alone almost half of the world to start our sanctuary. I guess having no siblings is different?"
Orion shook his head. "Alright. Then how about this; why are you always in the middle?"
