I have to get to him. Keep going. Must find him. He can help. He'll help me. I could only think about him as I fumbled into the office building, one hand pressed underneath my jacket. The stab wound ached, but I forced myself to ignore it as I sluggishly moved up the stairs. Finally, I found a door with a piece of paper taped to it. The paper read "Nelson and Murdock: Attorneys at Law".
I let myself smile in relief as I shoved open the door, leaning against the doorframe. A young, pretty blonde woman greeted me. She looked confused as she stared with wide eyes. She sat at a small desk and I guessed she was a secretary. "Can I help you?" she asked me. But the fight was leaving me. I made it here and the fight was almost gone.
I tried to step forward but my legs could no longer keep me up. I collapsed, hitting the floor hard. The woman let out a startled cry as I groaned, rolling onto my back. "Karen?" a muffled voice came before the door to an office opened. Out came a slightly chubbier man with shoulder length dirty blonde hair. "Holy shit," he muttered, staring down at me. "Foggy," a familiar voice called out. Behind the man – Foggy – was a familiar face to go with the voice.
My old friend fumbled around, pretending he couldn't see. I mean, he is blind, but he sees in a different way. He carefully and cautiously knelt down beside me. I couldn't help but smirk as Foggy knelt beside me as well. "Hey, lady, are you okay?" he asked me as I felt my friend's hand brush against my arm. "I'm no lady," I managed to grumble out, a slightly bitter laugh escaping me. My lidded eyes went to my friend's face as I saw his eyebrows shoot up from behind his dark red glasses. I knew he recognized my voice and my smirk widened.
"Allison?" he whispered in disbelief. "Hey, Matty," I mumbled out as I felt myself start to fade out. He called my name again, but it sounded like I was at the end of a tunnel. Everything was starting to go dark. Black shadows ringed my vision as I felt a hand slip across my stomach to my side. I barely felt the pain as Matt's nimble fingers touched the wound on my side. As soon as he felt the blood, he put pressure to the wound. "Allison, stay awake," Matt called out to me. But his voice was so quiet. So distant. And then everything faded.
I woke up to the sound of a steady beeping. It sounded like a machine. Actually, I think it was a heart monitor. My head felt heavy and my side ached. But I had to push the pain away. Forcing my eyes open, I saw I was in a white room. A hospital room. Groaning, I glanced over to see the blonde woman from earlier. Karen, I think?
Wait, hospital room. Hospital equals records. Records are online. Anything online can be hacked, especially hospital files. Knowing Matt, he would have used my real name. That means they can find me. "Shit," I hissed, forcing myself to sit up. Karen's eyes shot up and she stood. "What are you doing?" she asked me, panicking a little. I started ripping out the IV in my wrist with surprisingly steady hands.
"Hey, you can't do that!" Karen snapped, reaching towards me to stop my escape. But as she did, I reached up and wrapped my fingers around her neck, squeezing. She gasped, clawing at my hands. "Who are you?" I growled at her. "Karen. K-Karen Page," she managed to say. "What do you know about me?" I growled at her. She shook her head. "What do you know?" I shouted more forcefully, giving her neck a tighter squeeze before loosening my grip enough for her to speak. "Nothing. I don't know anything," she told me.
I glared at her, but I released her throat and shoved her back towards the chair she had been sitting in. She gasped for air, coughing as soon as it touched her lungs. She stared at me with wide, frightened eyes as she tried to regain composure. Meanwhile, I was ripping off all of the lead lines that were attached to me.
"You're lying. You know something," I told her. "No, I don't. I swear," she told me, her voice rough from my harsh grip. "No. You know my name and that's enough to get you killed," I told her as I shifted on the bed. I felt stitches in my side begin to tug, but I ignored it. "What is that supposed to mean?" Karen asked me. I groaned as I threw my legs over the edge of the bed. Taking a deep breath, I prepared myself. Then I pushed off the bed. I landed on shaky legs, but managed to stay upright.
