As soon as Clary got back to the institute she went straight to find Jace.
"What is the matter with you?" She asked him.
"What?" He replied coolly aggravating her even more.
"You were making digs at him that entire time."
"Oh so you're actually going to stand there and defend him when he practically just called me stupid, right in front of, oh I dunno, Everyone!"
"I know he did and I definitely did not let him get away with it. Why can't you just get along with him, you're one of the most important people in my life and I want you to like the guys that I date, but you weren't even trying."
"I don't care about him, I don't like him and I don't want you seeing him anymore."
"What?!" said Clary incrudeoulsy. "You don't even know him!"
"Yeah I do, and I hate him. I couldn't think of a worse person for you to be dating and I don't want you to see him anymore."
"You think that you can just tell me what to do and and I'm gonna oblige, you think i'm going to dump him just bcause you don't want me seeing him," Something snapped in her and the words poured out before she could stop them. "How dare you?! I've supported you with every single girl you've ever dated even when i didn't like her, i never complained or asked you to break up with a single one of them, not even Kaelie who, by the way, is an absolute bitch!"
"Is it my fault that you've never complained about the girls i dated? You know that if you ever hated one of them i would have broken up with her without a second thought!"
They stood there for a few minutes in silence breathing hard.
"Why? Why don't you want me to see him anymore?"
"He gives me a bad vibe, he's weird, something isn't right about him."
"Wow, you never fail to amaze me." She said laughing sarcastically "Really, that's the best you can do, He gives you a bad vibes? I can't belive you!" She scoffed.
"Clary listen to me, isn't it weird that this guy turns up out of nowhere, claims he's lived here his entire life yet no one has actually ever seen him except Izzy and that's only recently. And suddenly wants to date you when he doesn't even know you!"
"Is that such a bad thing that he wants to date me?"
"Yes, no, I don't care about that. Something about him just doesn't add up."
"Don't you want me to be happy?"
"I- what? Of course I want you to be happy. You're the single most important person in the entire world to me!" Clary sucked in a harsh breath.
"I just don't want you with him" She became infuriated all over again.
"No. No, that's not a good enough reason. Tell me the truth Jace, why don't you want me to see him? Why don't you like him?"
"Because I just don't!" He shouted
"No you obviously have a reason and that's why you so strongly feel that I should end it, so tell me? Why don't you like him?" She said shouting back, she wasn't sure why she was pushing him when she didn't actually want to be with Sebastian and agreed with everything Jace had said about him, maybe she was looking for something more, hoping for something more.
"Just because," he said more softly.
"Jace, you can tell me the truth. I don't care what it is, just, just tell me." She said suddenly feeling very exhausted. She never fought with Jace. And it hurt. They stood there in silence for a few seconds, then Jace walked over to her and grabbed her face and kissed her. She stood there utterly shocked for a moment before she melted against him and kissed him back. Her arms wound up his back and around his neck. He kissed her so passionately, she thought she might die. Her heart was racing and she could feel his racing too. She'd dreamt of this moment for so long but never in a million years had she expected it to happen. It was all she'd ever imagined and more. His hands were gentle against her cheeks, she could feel the callouses from holding his stele and his seraph blades. He pulled away but she gripped his shirt and pulled him back in. She felt as though they were the only two people in the world and nothing else mattered, not Sebastian, not the fact that they'd just argued, nothing. All of a sudden he broke away and ran before Clary even had the chance to open her eyes. He ran so fast she didn't even see a wisp. She stood there in shock, her heart still racing. She didn't know what to do, she looked around for any sign of Jace but it looked like he wasn't going to return. She went to her room and sat on the bed. After the shock had passed she felt so alive. Her body was buzzing with energy. She dialled Simon's number but he didn't pick up. She needed to talk to someone. She couldn't talk to Izzy because of Sebastian. She waited and waited for Simon to call her back but he never did and eventually she fell asleep.
