It's Getting In The Way

hum. i was reading the rtte wiki and read this:

  Just as Hiccup is left without any ideas on what to do, who to trust, or even how to handle his developing feelings for Astrid in the midst of growing danger, Viggo returns and offers the Dragon Eye as proof of his word and offers an equal alliance to bring Ryker down.

and,

  Hiccup and Astrid realize their relationship compromises their mission and promise to remain professional as the other riders finally learn their secret cementing their relationship 

so this one shot is kinda of inspired from those extracts...

ok look I know that Hiccup will honestly never do this like he would never break up with Astrid but yeh I'm in an angsty mood

angst and hiccstrid. this takes place somewhere in episodes shell shocked 1 and 2.

It's clear as crystals and plain as paper. Hiccup and Astrid's relationship has been deteriorating the professional dynamic of their relationship, and in that, their partnership in battle.

Their personal feelings have been getting in the way of their proficiency.

Astrid has been far to worried about Hiccup when they're in the midst of a battle, with arrows, boulders and fire being hurdled towards them, that he would get injured or harmed, when it was simply uncontrollable. But she wanted to keep her new boyfriend out of harm's reach and it was starting to exasperate Hiccup...

He cared for her. Deeply. And it really flattered Hiccup, and he appreciated it, that Astrid cared. But she's been so close to getting hit when he's too busy convincing him to go back to the Edge that it was becoming increasingly unsettling, that she will get hurt, because of him.

And he's been worried sick too - he just wanted her to stay at the Edge forever, because he couldn't bear the fact of losing Astrid to the hands of the world...but he couldn't. She was one of the best warriors. It just didn't work out both ways.

It was a distraction, an interference, worrying about Astrid constantly. But that's what loves does.  Hiccup couldn't afford a distraction. Not right now, when they were fighting a war.

That night, Hiccup walked over to Astrid's hut, the few steps he took was ones he dreaded. He really didn't want to do this, he loved Astrid, with everything he had. Was this a mistake...?

Hiccup shook his head. No, this was better for all of them. After the war, he hoped they could still get together...

He rapped on her hut door. "Astrid?"

The door flew open and Hiccup was met with Astrid's bright smile and glowing eyes.

"Hiccup!" She said cheerfully, pulling him in. Hiccup would miss her gorgeous face lighting up because of him...

"Hey Astrid." He greeted and couldn't but smile, she was so contagious.

"So? What are you doing at the late hour?" She asked, stepping closer to Hiccup so she was just a foot away.

Hiccup cleared his throat, feeling guilty that what he was about to say would extinguish the light in her blue eyes that only Hiccup could create. "We need to talk."

He could see the shock that hit Astrid when he said those foreign words, and something painful flared in his chest. "Okay?" She stated, stumped. "What about?"
