Lucy de Fiore's POV
Why must this be happening? Why must it be him...?
I stay rooted to the ground as I stared back into his violet eyes. They looked so forlorn and sorrowful.... I gritted my teeth as I tried to form a sentence in my head. "Why...?" I blinked back my tears and stood up unsteadily without looking away once. He kept his silence as he broke his gaze away from mine as if he was holding back.
I walked towards him as a tear escaped my eye, "Do you know what you're doing is wrong? Do you know that? You've killed someone, Sting!" I yelled at him. He bit his lip and shut his eyes. "Look at me Sting," I murmured. He opened his eyes hesitantly. By then, my tears were overflowing. I can't hold up my emotions any longer....
My arms found his waist as I wrapped my arms around him tightly, afraid that he would leave me again. "L-Luce?" He mumbled softly, yet somehow his voice was music to my ears. I've been waiting and waiting for this for so long. "..Please, don't leave me again." I said while trying to hide my tears away from him. But my voice gave me away. Without any hesitation, he returned the hug just as needy. "I've been searching for you for so long... So please, don't..." I murmured in his chest again.
He tightened his arms around me as I felt a drip of water on my neck, "I missed you so much." He said hoarsely with a hint of desperation in his voice. "I missed you too." I mumbled back. We cried silently in each other's arms for a while.
Then, we moved under a shady tree and started to talk and catch up with other's life. "I ran away from home because Father forced me into an arranged marriage with the Dexent family's son, I'm sure you know him. His name is Natsu Dexent. But neither of us held romantic feelings towards each other, instead, we're really good friends." I said as I smiled fondly at him. His eyes flashed a sign of hatred for one second before it was back to normal.
I must be imagining things.
"You're still a bad child just like when we were young." He replied as he returned a sweet smile. "Oh well, bad habits die hard." I joked, causing the both of us to laugh heartily.
There was a moment silence before I decided to bring up the topic we've been avoiding, "Sting, why did you kill Mirajane?" He winced at my sentence as his eyes were clouded with sadness. It pained me to see him in this state. He kept quiet. As I thought, he didn't want to talk about it. I let out a sigh. "I had no choice. It was my mission." Sting said. I was surprised, I really didn't expect him to talk. "What mission?" I raised my brow. He sighed as he ran his fingers through his blonde hair. "It's a long story Luce." Almost immediately, I replied, "I have all the time in the world." He groaned in frustration before he started talking.
"It was way back when we were still children. Do you remember the night of our vow at the church? It was that night when my whole family was slaughtered." He said as he looked at me with vacant eyes. My hands covered my mouth in shock. "At that time when I returned to the mansion, I saw my parents in a pool of blood." He reminisced.
--
"Father! Mother!" I cried out as I ran quickly to their body stained with blood. Everything was a blur as I felt hatred and sadness. "Help! Please someone help! Father and Mother are...!" I screamed with all I got until I felt a firm grip on my hand. I turned my head only to see my father's hand gripping onto mine firmly, he was mumbling something. I brought my ears closer to him and heard him mumbling, "...Dexent.... The Dexent family...."
--
"And just like that, my parents passed away." He smiled sadly at me. I could feel tears rolling down my cheeks, I hugged Sting tightly, "I'm sorry." He returned the hug briefly before breaking the hug, "I'm okay." I nodded, also signalling him to go on. "At the same night, a man found me and took me in. That man happened to be the head of an organisation, Sabertooth. His name is Jiemma." That name rung a thought in my head, my eyes shot up to his immediately. As if he was reading my mind, he replied, "Yes, Sabertooth is an organisation made up of assassins. I'm working under Master Jiemma as one of them."
I swallowed a lump down my throat as I tried to conceal the shock in me.
Sting is an assassin....
"In Sabertooth, there's an unspoken rule. It is, 'To kill, or be killed.' Our orders are absolute. If we defy them, we're the ones that would be killed within a heartbeat." He said bluntly as I winced at that thought.
"Anyway, on a fine day, Master Jiemma found out who was the culprit of the slaughter that night. It happened to be a noble family. That family was the family you're forced to marry to - the Dexent family." Sting said coldly. I gazed at Sting in shock, only to see his eyes frozen with hate. At that point, realisation dawned on me, Sting was out for the kill.
"The Dexents ordered to kill my family as we had a debt that was left unsettled with them for many years. Out of impatience, they killed my whole family. But what those bastards didn't know was there was one of us left - me. Now, my goal is to avenge my family. I'm going to return them the pain and humiliation I've felt back then." He said icily with his voice dripping with malice.
I was speechless. I didn't know what to say. I was not there for him when he went through all of these. It must be terrifying and sad. No wonder his face was distorted with anguish the whole time. But he's still wavering, even a blind man could tell.
Sting was afraid of killing.
He looked up at the orangey sky and returned his gaze back to mine, "I have to go now Luce." He said in disappointment. "...Will you leave me again?" I asked as sadness was piling up in me. Sting shook his head in response as he caressed my cheek gently, "I told you to stay away but you didn't listen. Now I won't be able to restrain the urge to see you anymore." My mouth twitched into a smile at that response as I touched his hand.
"We will meet again, I promise." He smiled as he planted a kiss on my forehead before leaving without a trace.
I touched my forehead as I felt heat rushing up to my cheeks.
Seriously, I can't get enough of him.
